dynasties that began in the third century before Christ, when all of China was considered under one head, and ended forever with the dethronement of the last Manchu emperor in 1911. During the long centuries between, China provided the major cultural focus for all of eastern Asia, including Japan and Korea, the northern and central Asian continent, Tibet, and much of Indo-China.
More than five hundred members of the Museum and their guests attended the opening ceremony with Dr. Ping-ti Ho,s speech a highlight. Dr. Kenneth Starr will conduct three informal lecture-tours of the exhibition hall.
Dr. Ho, professor of Chinese History and Institutions at the University of Chicago, said the Ch'ing, or Manchu, had a life span similar to that of Russia from Peter the Great to the Social Democrat Party (now Communist Party) revolution in 1917.
During the Ch'ing Dynasty, Dr. Ho told the audience, the Jesuits (members of the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic religious order) made substantial contributions to the Chinese society, both culturally and scientifically.
Though an alien reign in Chinese history, Manchu emperors paid more tribute to Confucius than the Chinese emperors themselves prior to Manchu did. For instance, Dr. Ho pointed out, Manchu emperors performed three-kowtow-nine-prostration before Confucius statue at ceremonies but the Chinese emperors never did so themselves.
Dr. Ho praised the Museum's collection of Chinese materials which in some aspects, such as copies of stone inscriptions and jades, surpassed Chinese museum's collections themselves.
