To mark Rev. G. G. Nakaya-ma's 1 Oth ann ivei"8 a ry of his services to the Church, a social was held in his honor on Sunday evening. October 15 at the Church of Ascension under the convenor-ship of the Fujinkai. During the evening Rev.' Nakaya ma was presented with a silver cream and sugar set by the church in appreciation for his services especially among the young people. Representatives from various organizations expressed their con-gratulalations and best wishes for his work in the years to come.

Seikokai Social
The Seikokai AY PA opened their new season with a very successful social on Thursday October 5 at the Church of Ascension. The second social will take the form of a roller skating party to be held at Happyland on Monday November 6. A special conimit-tee has drawn up tentative plans for a program of fun and novelty! SUGAR BLUES
It's funny how women always.manage to get into the thick of things. And when they fall into a panic then things cortainly start humming, the sugar refinery has finally recovered from the recent sugar rush wlwh rumors of war at the end of August sent housewives scurrying to grocery stores to lay irV a huge supply of granulated sweets. v.-'v".-:';:.;;     .;'� ;��;.�,';. /'
It was {ust in the middle of vacations at Hie factory. The refinery is always clot�d for two weeks in th� summer. Lar^e demands for sugar suddenly be^an to pour in. Tht refinery was re�6p�ned and the employees were immediately recalled from their holiday bliss. Tne sugar business hummed and flourished for days, and hugo notices of "There is plenty of *ugar" dppesred ^ :�� in all the daily papers.
Then the sugar scare vanished just.as suddenlyas it had appeared. Things returned to normal, but the echo stilj resounded at the factory for weeks. And housewives sat back satisfied, with the overflowing supply of sugar in their cellars and were more than pleased with the commotion that they had managed to stir up.

SALAD STEWS
As you pull off the leaves of the lettuce to reach its heart, do you ever wonder what secrets are wrapped up within the tender sculptured folds of this cool crisp vegetable; Long, long ago, when the civilized world consisted only of the races around the Aagean, the lettuce was discovered growing on the hills. Then someone conceived . the possibilities of this vegetable. He plucked its delicate silver-green leaves and dressed them with olive oil. And 16, we had pur first salad.
Lettuce, which knows no time nor season, stands by us all year round and deserves a bit of care. YVh&n. placing if in the refrigerator, be sure not to let it come into contact with the ice Itself .The dark outer leaves that you have cut off, should not be thrown away, but can be added to other cooking vegetables, they become a lovely transparent green and have an elusive flavor. Try shredding the leaves and adding therm to cooking peas; season the dish and serve with butter or cream   There'll be shouts for a second helping,
But the inner leaves are best for the salad. Cut out the root end with a small knife and place the head in cold water.. The leaves are then easily separated without tearing.   Tightly grown
Jeftuce need not be washed leaf by leaf.

oh so delicious, for variety add a little chopped onion or cheese to the dressing. Rubbing the salad bowl with a clove of garlic adds a piquant flavor. .
