When he was captured, Miyamura weighed155 pounds. When he was released, he weighed110 pounds, he said.
"If 1りadn't k印t eating, I wouldnYhave weighed that much," he said. "I saw some boys tumedinto skeletons. The first year we were there, I saw an average of five to seven prisoners a day being buried.
"This vyぉn't all our troops, some were linけed Nations forces."
The food and living conditions improved after talks began about exchanging prisoners, he said.
Miyamura said he was not aware of any physical torture, but that he considered some treatment by the Chinese to be mental torture.
Hardest to take, however, was the constant rumor tl^at prisoners soon would be freed. Peace talks kept up for "/2 years before Miyamura was【eleased Aug. 21, 1953, to Freedom V HI age, a makeshift camp just south of the 38th parallel.
"When I crossed that line into Freed V HI age there was no jumping or hollering becauseけwas so hard to believe ,t finally had come true," he said.

"Dearest Terry," the telegram read, ,ever so happy to be an American as today. Your prayers for me have been answered. Am feeling OK, getting wonderful care. Don't worry about me. On my way home by boat-Longing to see you again. Best wishes to aH at home. Hersh,"
When the boat docked in San Francisco, Miyamura was the "rst one off.
"I sayV my wife and sisters there. My dad also was there. Oト,I was so h柳y,', he said.
When Miyamura returned to Gallup by train on Sept 9,the town turned out to weにome him. Mayor D. F. Molけca pro claimedはHershey MiyarmjraDay.
"As we were pulling into the station, I could see all the crowds, the band playing. Amelio DiGregoTio, we had been friends from childhood, he was one of the first persons I saw," Miyamur'a remembered of the tearful reunion.
He rode through town in a convertible and the parade ended in什ont of his father's house.
In October, Miyamura, his family and severalclose friends, including fellow POW Dan McKinney from Clovis, were flown to Washington, D.C., where Miyamura officially received his award from President Dwight Eisenhower.
