TORONTO — The media must help stamp out racism by better reflecting Canada's
the federal cabinet minister responsible for muけにu,turさl-'sm.
Jim Fleming singled out television commercials in a statement "cently to a con-fet"ence on visible minorities and the media.
He said adolescents a re the most susceptible to racial stereotyping.
A typicial high schoolstu-dent watches 350,000 commercials by the time he graduates, Fleming said "け visibleminorけies are not part of this electronic, panorama, how are the young people going toきccept blacks, Asians or native people as part of their Canadian world?"
The warm - heartedけa Han mother cooking spaghetti and the inscrutable Chinese laundry man who praises a pariicular detergent are the same kind of generaけzation that "for years kept women scrubbing bathtub;i 9nd making cakes all day ,ong,,, Mに Flemihg said.
Since1974, slightly more than 50 per cent of immigrants have CO me from countries in Central and Sりuth Americさ,Africa and Asia.
"Certainly in our biggercは-ies, people are accepting and enjoying this new mix,にwonder why then, the people who decide what we see on our television screens every d^^y don't take&dvant邻e of this atmude," he said.

"しife in the Fast Lane," the play, is a fascinating one man tour de force. Dynamic actor and writer,しane Nishikawa manages to evoke a vision of Japanesae Ameilea through his preseりce arid Ws words. Specけically, he gets accFoss
generation Japanese in America.
EnらrQy and emotion abound
when the Sansel Poet character of the ptey talks tひan unknown interviewer about racialslurs in school; rijrrubles inthestreet; Wo rid War H detent,on camps, the names of w川ch he recites as alha-ny to、 the or deal suffered by the Nisei; and the wonderful foods his Ob a-Chan used to make for him. Nishikawa takes his character and his audience through various incarnations depending on the sけu at ion until the Sansei is seen clearly in vivid imagery.
In the firial segment of the play,ゆe wliter brings to bear the full brunt of the commercial and media bHtzed cyn卜 cism of the times through his poem "Japanese Junkies" to accuately depict the Sansei's dilema and perhaps the Yon-sei inheritance:
