Demand for Pen-Pals Heavy, Not Caught Up
Since printing the story about students from Japan seeking pen-pals in Canada, we have been deluged with requests for letters. We have had a surprising large demand that \vhile Aye have enough letters to go arburid, it takes time to comply with each request* :
So if those who have written us for letters, have not as yet received any, we request that they bear with us: and we will try to get them off as quickly as we" can.during the slack bet-\veen issues. . :
If there arc "any further requests for pen-pal letters, we ask that they enclose a" stamped self-addressed envelope, .This will help us out greatly in plying with your request

;' TOKYO, Japan -~ :Witl>: much fanfare, "Tokyo File 212", the first jfomt Japanese-American film to be! Tnade in Japan, or anywhere else for that matter, was unveiled in Tokyo oh Jan. 25 at the Nippon Qekijo theater. There was a long line" of people many hours before the opening and your reporter," \vho arrived 25 minutes -before; the curtain was to go up, couldn't get a seat and had to be satisfied with standing room space, two-thirds of the way back along, the wall. Many Occupation personnel were present and the premier showing was truly an international affair. With Suisei Matsui, one of. the actors in the movie, acting, as master of ceremonies, a stage show was given before the actual movie was showrv
"Sally" Nakarhura, who is the bad man in the moyie, sang "Old Maiv River" in his superb style and got a big hand for it. Reiko Otani, who was born in Tacoma and who was in Seattle for some time before she cape to Japan, appeared too, and extended greetings. She thanked all for their support and hoped that she would be able to jastify their hopes in her. Being a new star as he i*. it will take quite a lot of acting yet before she bcroacs a firkt-rai^

File"Panned By. lapan Critics
As movies go. "Tokyo File" dqesn't rate too high, hot even.:' for the Japanese critics. It's compared with horse operas, plenty of noise and nothing much else/ ;
One critic, who claims he's been seeing pictures for, the last 30 years, places it in> the same category as the weekly serials in the silent picture days; ;

tra of Japan", also sang a song in his characteristic stylo, a style which has the Japanese bobby-soxers swooning over him and has*them flocking to hear him.
In between, the "Down Boats", a swing orchestra, gave with music, soft and smooth, and had the. dance-minded tapping their feet. The Nippon Gekijo dancing team, as usual, went through its familiar legkicking and body-wriggling routine with, not much cnthuL-iasin and . cveri lei^ applause fmn the audience.
After the stage show, the Japanese movie stars appearing in the film lined up on the stage to receive bouquets. Immediately afterward, "Tokyo File 212" was shown amid the growing ,disap~ p-Vittimoiit of the onlooker? who had r.i'Tc *:r U:5^ rxp^-:if^i a very superior picture and * i'-. rh^'AT. irtKf-itd, a "i*ass*bifc eiiteruun-ment" movie, as one onlooker te^"neQ tv.
Altboogh Florence Mar?y received favorable comment for her acting, Robert Peyton t*k* i'n the lead" rote, wa* tabbed am -only "offoary". He kad many
ap-
scenes taken away from-hinv by tiny Suisei Matsui. The scene1' towards the end showing a close-up of Matsui after he had shot one of the gangsters provoked laughter from the audience*.
As those who saw the movie will readily agree, "Sally" Naka-mura was the outstanding actor, His lawless English and Japanese together with above-average acting will insure that he will be cast in films. He has just fin-isHed;. "Moments, of Truth'-, and y>;ill he appearing in anolhor joint 'production . 'Jn 'technicolor: "Sword of Arima", starting in March.
Newcomer . Keiko Otani peared "in just throe short sc and it would be difficult to judge her \vorth .front ihese-iappoaranc-es. ' . '..' -
After the show, I went to congratulate "Sally" on his fine performance and found him surrounded by a family of Occupation personnel. Two teen-age dependents were getting autographs from him. Coolly composed "Sally" gave the impression of one who knows he is good but who doesn't boast about it
As far as entertainment K'^'Si it was a good movie, but th* terrific build-up given it led the people to expect too much and contributed that much more to their disappointment.
