In the opinion of Ranan R. 丄urle, that latterImage— which dates atleast as far as World War H — does not reflect the "present reaHty(' of Japan. So the man who Is said to be one of the world's best-known political cartoonists has launched a search for a new symbol for Japan, one offering the same kind of instant recognition as Uncle Sam, John Bull and the Russian 日ear.
The 51-year-old Lurie, Israeli-bom, now a naturalized U.S. ci"zen, has spent the last several years moving around the world while turning out daily cartoons that are distributed to hundreds of publications in 49 countries, According to the Guinness Book of Records, he is the wcbrld's most widely syndicated poHtical cartoonist-Early this year,しurie came to Japan for the first time and set up his drawing board at the Asahi Shimbun that publishes his work in this country.
The simple fact that he was here meant that Japan more frequently became the subject matter for his cartoons.
"But I suddenly felt a strange thing," he said in an interview with AP staffer Kazuo Abiko. "When I wanted to portray the U.S., England or France, I always had a national symbol. When I wanted to portray Japan, definitely one of the world's most important nations in the world today, there was no symbol to portrayは,Even the Russians have a bear."
"While working, I started to develop a Japanese per. sonamy. I said, 'My God! We should make, or1should make for the first time, a Japanese symbol or image that can be used in poUtical cartoons and national symbols in generaに"
He points out that Uncle Sam was created by a non-American, "so I suppose there is nothing wrong with me, a foreigner, trying to do the same thing with Japan.
abroad. Theぉpaり辩も:!are tall61^ ,ncl much more,h"nd-80nhe than the lma。6',, he said.
The cfiirtopnlst proposed his Idea to i^幼h1 r"ders, who he said w$re "jsufprls-ed" but agrー after* acon-ference thatはwas a worthwhile idea.
Lurle站kecl readers of the paper, which; has aclrcula-tlon (5f mo re 、h an10 million, to offer suggestions on what kind of International symbol they would like for Japan. He said he has learned from "dozens" of people, "all of whom are craving for a new symbol."
He plans to unveil the new image on August 25, at a ceremony to which Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasoneぃ foreign diplomats and other dignけaries are Jnvけed. The Asahi will host the event.
Yoriyoshi Naけo, deputy chief of As ahいs foreign news section, said the newspaper, while supporting the project, has no role in the decision. "It's entirely up to his (Lu-rie's) creativけy and perception about Japan and Japanese," Naけo said.
"The very fadt that a man likeしurie is working in Japan is proof that Japanese society is being opened to the world," wrote Ken Shjraishi, a veteran Asahi foreign correspondent who is now deputy managing edけor.
Lurie has discarded the old grinning stereotype," Shirai

"I w川be available to the media as a symbol of Japan, and as a resuはJapan w川not be represented any more by some kind of businessman wけh glasses, big teeth and 81 camera," he added.
Lurie will not offer any dues before the unveiling on the exact nature of the new cartoon image. "The only thing I can disclose now is thatけ's not going to be a woman," he said.

Lurie said his project started from the basにnotion that the image of Japan he had before coming here was "completely dけferent" from what he found. "The Japa. nese person is very different from the image of Japanerse
