We urged this man to '、 call CIRPA and he has pursued his complaint with ^ them. We know that he will, get*qfood impartial advice.
Many of us do npt have these encounters with police, but when they happen, we are completely shocked that our police force could exercise such arbitrary farce against us. Fortunately, this does not happen very of ten- In- ' deed, there have been, improvements over the past few years. The point is that this kind of thing should not happen at all.
We are pleased to su-pport organizations !lik.e CIRPA because t through their work, we may be able to achieve a better police, force to setve our citizens needs.

CITIZENS AND THEIR POLICtE

We all respect our police; but how many of us feel that our police always respond to our needs? Do we feel that our streets and neighbourhoods are safe? Do we always feel that the police will be there when we need them?
Certairily, those in our community who do hot speak English have real problems dealing with the police. We have argued that the police should strengthen their efforts to bring morej Chinese-speaking officers onto the force- At the moment, there are very few such officers and this must be changed.
Beyona this, there are too many citizens who experience problems in their treatment by police。 TAis is particularly true of residents from minority communities. The problems
range from verba1 abuse to more serious problems. Some times residents are actually beaten physically by some

THE REAL ISSUES IN ELECTING REPRESENTATIVES FOR Tl
In the November 12th election for the school boardr many candidates are ignoring the real concerns involved in the education of our children. Instead, wild and irrelevant accusations are bombarding voters. Some candidates f are spending' their time f accusing others of being right wing, left wirig, Marxist, Communist, racist or partisan. These silly labels are irrelevant to the real issues that concern parents.
Based on my contacts with the Chinese community, I believe that the following is a list of the main issues concerning parents today.. 1) High academic standards in our schools: Parents see Oils question from many
angles. They want to see \ more creative homework. There is a concern for better j discipline in schools. \ Pareats want to see teachers inspired by the school bureaucracy so that they havel better morale. Finally, i parents want to be informeci of their child's progress \ before major problems are 1 developed, not after. 2) Better promotion of
third language courses-such as Chinese/ in j secondary schools~Parents want encouragement for secbnd-ary school students to takb heritage languages\ beyond j grade j and they want classes started in high schools iff there is a sufficient demand。 3》 Increase 'English as d Second Language* iristg\t-° ction in elementary f schoolsT A Canadian born
