'Breaking Free9! That's;the slogan you'11 see on ] advectisemeats.around the city ,. urging us to escape from our smoking habit. It* s an important and positive message ― and:we should all heed it-
The City of Toronto Department of Public Health is fogusing its advertising- campaign on youAg people - The advertisements on bus shelters show three teenagers energetically making their way along Queen Street, with tickets to the latest rock concert in their hands- They look a lot like the teenagers in the ads for 'Tempo* a new cigarette on the market which is being marketed towards t>he younger market,:
What is the concern, here? Why direct anti-smoking propaganda at kids? The answer is found in the huge toll tal^en. r by ci«gatette -。 smoking in Canada- The latest ;' estimates are that 12 r 0,00 -t Canadians will jdie this yeai^ because of smoking-related ) disease - Much of the lost llife, worktime and health care dollars could have been saved, had siroking prevention and cessation begun years ago so that we would h!ave virtually jio new smokers th.i;s 、 year -
The tobacco companies are ;

The statistics show it: there is no question that smokers now constitute a shrinking minority^in CanadaBut the one area where , new smokers seem to be found is1 amongst young people, particularly young women- That is why the J tobacco companies are appealing to the next generation in an effort to bolster sagging sales. !
The tobacco companies deny that they aire trying to penetrate young minds though. They point to a self-imposed code of ethics which they say prohibits them from using

It' s tough to rig elections these days ― ask Ferdinand Marcos ^ current president^ of the. Philippines. Several months ago -the embattled leader bowed to I American pressure and called riational elections to provide ihi-s corrupt administration with at 、 least a fig leaf of respectability- ―
The move backfired because ;:(: Marcos ,found himself faced with:v unexpectedly strong competition , from the Cora Aquino.' widovx of ,the murdered opposition leader Senator
Aguino. ,
It became necessary for Marcos and his henchmen to resort to intimidation and fraud in ordA to obtain the desired result•
Aquino fox he^ part hps promised a campaign of massive civil disobedience to contest the election results. I If the :campaign gets underway there can be little doubt it will be a very short step to outriqht civil war. '".
1[he Philippine people have indicated they vant change. ;II they are denied it at the ballot box they may try to achieve It ^ith bullets instead.
Already there are thousands of Philippinos doing just that.\ The communist New People's Army is a force to be recJconed with in! the countryside. Indeed, the American motivation in pressuring Marcos to call elections was the worrisome prospect that the strength of the commvinists is growing daily^ :
Ironic, isn't it that the \ election has strengthened the: forces of opposition, not weakened them. I suppose it just goes.,to prove that when, you have thjs fkind of corruption the Marcos regime represents the corruption touches everything, even the f free | election * which is intended t|o eradicate the disease. [
The lesson of course is Uiat it is going to take more than a -sham election to reform the likes pf Marcos. Undoubtedly, there ace a number of experts in the Amer|iciari State,department trying to figure what their next move will be" They have very limited option^. Marcos controls the army; the; only alternative military force is| the conwnunists. Same choice. |
It should be ihteresting : see
what Cora Aquino can do. she has proven herself to be leader who can mobilize mass support. But she must strike now to achieve;her goal- Prior to the election she: made an agreement with her ; I influential running-mate that in; the next election it wpuld be his turn to challenge for the j presidency. Unless Aquino ca^ j grasp the victory, Marcos is ! } trying to rob from her. There imay not be a second chance.
