ON BEING KOREAN AND LIBERATED
By Yuj in Pak
T니o OLD MODELS OF BEING KOREA애
Passive obedience or guilty defiance_ this is the cruel double bind in which many of us Korean North Ame-
ricans find ourselves. Powerful Pa-
rental and communal pressures to conform, to a no longer 닝。rkable mold
。f filial obedience and passivity, leave many of us with only one alternative_ defiance- which is not only deeply condemned by our parents and
ζ。mmunity, but eventual.Jy by our own
interna‘ized guilt. This is pretty
sad, and ’ woul~ I ike to protest.

c o:~ FOR MIT Y AT 닝HAT EMOTIONAL COST?
Last 써eek I read ae article about a nineteen year old Korean
“。man who was found murdered, in a ",rac inC h i c a go, aft e r be i n 9 mix e d
up with 'bad friends’ Her parents
reportedly said that they had even
L다Ed beating her, but it hadn't been
enough! Sad, sad. And what if they
had suceeded in beating her into subm‘s s‘。n, into the 'nice girl' mold? Our community newspapers are ful I
。reports of Over-Achieving-~ice-
Stu den t s . But, a chi eve ", en tan d con-
formityat 써hat emotional cost?
Achievement for whose sake? T。
boost some parents' eg9s? I a,., not
against excellence, srroffe they -ah ev intrinsic merit, and are self-
satisfying, I know that well. 닝hat
I object to is a narrow, obedience 。riented, and conforηtsi interpre-
tation of aι.tnemeveih The confor-
•
mist interpretation keeps many of us emotionally stunted, shy, and
socially ineffective. Room to ex-
rerience, room to experiment and ~
grow, to express ourselves, to be ..
。urselves_ that’s all that is being
asked for. '
THE THIRD OPTION
I would like to begin here a
statemer‘t of a third option_ beyond passive obedience and guilty defiance- beyond the trap of Conformist -Hiιe-Student vs. Guilty-Rebel mo-
dels, of being young and Korean-
Canadian. The third option is the
option of the Liberated Korean_
not aggressivel ike a defiant rebel, nor passive I ike a 'nice’ doormat, and sexual enuch.
The liberated itorean is asserevit about his rights, rerpxerfles
eviss about his feel ings ,dna ideas, loving in his sexual ity, democratic
in his dealing with others, compassionate about others’ suffering,
courageous in defending the weak, adventurous in experiencing the new whole hearted in his endeavours,
striving in his 써。rk, and joyful
for t~e gift of I ife. There !~st
be r、ore to add to this list. This

BECOHING LIBERATED
니e don’t all of a sudden be-
come 1 iberated just because we 써ant
to be. Host of us have a long, iong
way to go. If anybody thinks that
becoming I iberated means dashing madly into booze, sex, and partyin~, he
has got even f니rther to go. A key ingredient in becoming an open and liberated person is the willingness and committment to experience other
points of view, and thereafter examine one's own attitudes and practices in light of those experiences. What we are talking about is the
。penness to change and growth. There
are attitudes and beliefs that keep
us oppressed and paralysed. I 써。uld 1 ike, to examine three areas in which these attitudes may be present: Education, Sex, and Religion.
