Opposition to interference in the internal affairs of Israel by outsiders who felt privileged to do so by virtue of their philanthropic devotion was expressed in New York by Justice Justine Wise Polier, president of the women's division of the American Jewish Congress. Re-elected president for her third consecutive term, Justice Polier said that the right of determination of the kind of government that Israel should have belonged only to the people of the fledging nation.
Mrs. Polier held that American Jews were obligated both as Jews and Americans to fight against impairment of that freedom for Israeli citizens "as we would against any impairment of our own freedom." "Our respect for and sense of oneness with the people of Israel," she declared, "causes us to be concerned with their freedoms as we are with our freedoms.
"No gifts to Israel can justify political interference. We also feel sure that men and women of various political organizations must and will refrain from political interference in- the life of Israel. Freedom of the people who inhabit the land to determine the government under which they shall live goes to the essence of freedom and democracy."
Mrs. Polier contended that preservation of our democratic society precluded any compromise with totalitarianism that "degrades human dignity." She cited the Soviet Union and Franco Spain as areas in which there was "no respect" for the conscience of the individual, and thus no spiritual freedom,

reports the New York Times.
"Fascist dictatorships," she asserted, "have again proven that unless there be clear and absolute separation of church and state there will be neither freedom of conscience nor freedom of religion."
HAILS BRITISH TIES WITH ISRAEL
GtlStol MEAD SPECIALTIES LTD.
Herbert Morrison, until October the Foreign Secretary of the Labor Government, hailed the "steadily improving" relations between Britaim and Israel. He expressed the hope for a better understanding among Middle East nations that would brir>~ both Israel and Egypt into the cooperative defense of the area with the Western powers. He spoke in London at a dinner celebrating the fifteenth anniversary conference of the British section of the World Jewish Congress.
Lord Reading, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs in the new Conservative Government, and son of the late Rufus Isaacs, Liberal statesman, assured the Congress that it would continue to have a receptive hearing at the Foreign Office. Dr. Israel Goldstein, chairman of the United States branch of the Congress, voiced the "deep satisfaction" of the American Jewish community at the growing pattern of friendly relations between Britain and Israel.
Dr. Goldstein referred to threats to Jews against which the Congress is on guardto countries behind the Iron Curtain where the "bodv exists but the soul is consumed," to Arab countries where Jewish lives, he said, were threatened and to Latin> America, where the Nazis have established a foothold and springboard.
Contrast baths for the feet will do much for their health. By immersing the feet alternately for two minutes in hot and then two minutes in cold water, circulation is improved and the whole body relaxed. The bathing may be continued for ten or fifteen minutes and then the feet should be thoroughly dried and dusted with a good foot powder.
Those who cannot swim should take advantage of winter swimming lessons, if that is possible in their community. Instruction in swimming should be an important item in a person's education, yet many fail to learn how to take care of themselves in the water in case of accident

U.S. TO HELP ISRAEL PAY FOR GOODS
Up to $25,730,000 will be made available to Israel in United States economic assistance through an interim agreement, the U. S. State Department reported. Aid of up to $60,000,000 for Israel was provided in the new Mutual Security Act passed. The funds would be used for specific refugee relief and resettlement projects. The agreement was affected by an exchange of notes.
The United States will help Israel pay for $14,230,000 worth of goods bought since last July 1, including wheat, oil seeds, petroleum,
and raw cotton for textile manufacture. The rest made avail-able under the agreement will be used for contracting for $6,000,000 worth of food stuffs, $3,000,000 for parts for a power plant, and $2,500,000 worth of irrigation equipment.
