Ship Travel Has Found Warm Comfort In Cruise Business
Ship travel across the Atlantic dropped in 1965, according to the Atlantic Passenger Steamship Conference's annual tally; but the steamship lines, which operate a total of 37 liners in trans-Atlantic service, could take comfort from two sources.
First, there was an increase in cruising by the same ships from 143,-000 cruises in 1964 to 173,184 last year, writes Walter Harnsha in the New York Herald Tribune. The 30,-184-passenger increase more than offset the loss in revenue from trans-Atlantic crossings because cruises are longer than crossings and command higher fares.
Second, liners in trans-Atlantic service last year operated with more passengers per voyage than before. This is because there was a 12 per cent drop in the number of trans-Atlantic voyages last year from 1964, compared with a drop of only 8 per cent in passenger travel across the ocean.
Ships belonging to member companies of the Atlantic Passenger Steamship Conference, based in Folk-stone, England, and its New York counterpart, the Trans-Atlantic Pas-sengc Steamship Conference, made 883 Atlantic crossings last year between the United States or Canada and Europe. This was a drop of 120 voyages from the 1,003 crossings in 1964, according to the New York Herald Tribune.
Dr. H. N. Dutihl, of the Holland-America Line, chairman of the Atlantic Passenger Conference, said the increase in the number of the cruise passengers resulted from the emphasis by the steamship industry on the holiday aspect of sea travel.
people retain, and the speed at which they come up with material, is impressive. An agent is a talking encyclopedia, a human computing machine. To complicate his life, the material which he feeds on plane and train schedules, hotel tariffs, currency rates, etc. - always is "subject to change without notice."
"See so-and-so," a girl said as if she were boasting, "he knows all the deals." Which is probably the highest recommendation an agent can get.
Normally, there is no charge for making simple travel reservations. The agent exacts a fee only when multiple schedules arc required, or frequent changes are made in original plans, or for special services. What the agent charges in fees, he may save his customers in telephone tolls. Fees for cancellations, deducted from the deposit, depend both on the policy of the hotel and carrier involved and terms set up by the agent.
The agent's commission comes to about five percent of a sale on domestic carriers, up to seven on international routes, none on booking railroad tickets. The commission is paid by the carrier company directly to the agent.
TRAVEL AGENTS ARE IMPORTANT!
Travel agents, unlike geography professors, can't be expected to have the last word on every country in the world, a total of 132; its enough if they know how to get yon where yon want to go.
Nearly 80 per cent of the travelling public relics on the services of agents to arrange their transportation, prepare individual itineraries, reserve rooms, and, in addition, advise on such questions as tipping, baggage, auto licenses abroad, health requirements and activities and entertainment of special interest.
Travel agents do. everything except hand out motion sickness pills, and some might even be glad to recommend a reliable brand of these. They arrange package plans and group tours on grand and less grand scales, or steer solitary souls on an eccentric course say, mountain-climbing or, spelunking.

Israel's First Motel Chain Will Give Sparkle To Smaller Centres
The first motor hotel chain in Is-racel was launched last fall, in Acre, on the Mediterranean, north of Haifa. The 56-room beachsidc motel, located on the historic Argaman Beach, is Israel's first American-style motel facility, according to its developer, the Investment and Tourist Centre Ltd., of Tel-Aviv.
The organization also announced a program for the construction of larger motor hotel facilities at Nahariyah in northeast Galilee, the most popular shore resort for Israelis; and at Nazareth, Safcd, Eilat and Sodom. The company, which owns key locations in_these rcsor,t areas, has received government and municipal approval and cooperation for its enterprises.
Plans have already been approved and construction will begin shortly^ it was revealed, for two motor hotels of 200 rooms each at Nahariyah and one motel of 100 rooms in Nazareth. The latter will be conducted in cooperation with Church officials in Israel for Christian pilgrims.
Including the new Acre motel, the firm plans to produce within the next 560 rooms for moderate-priced tour-ismin Israel, at an investment of approximately S4'l> million.
The opening of the Hashoshonim Motel, it was pointed out by Investment and Tourist Centre executives, marks the beginning of modern road accommodations for Israeli vacationers and visitors to that country.

plus the construction of new highways to accommodate it, is the key to what is predicted will be a trend to motel development for tourists.
To date most hotel construction in Israel has been of the big city luxury hotel variety, designed for the tourists from here, who demand such amenities; or smaller pensions and kibbutz rest houses, mostly for Israeli families. Lately though, the influx of tourists of a younger age bracket from Europe and to an extent from North America seeking more moderate cost accommodations, has launched the motel idea for low cost and mobility, bringing some tourists out of the more expensive cities to Israel's beautiful Galilee, Dead Sea, Negev and Eilat regions.
The pioneering Hashoshanim Motel offers beachside rooms, with breakfast. It is designed in a series of four-
teen four-room stone pavilions clustered around a central administration and restaurant building. The Nahariyah projects will include a seaside motel of six two-story buildings, with sixteen rooms in each, plus a beach cabana for every room. The company will build the Asher Hotel in Nahariyah in a series of four structures for rooms with terraces and a circular central building for both transient and permanent guests. Another project planned by the company is a railway building as a new home for the Nahariyah railroad station the end of the Israel north-south-line which will house a motel and shopping center.
Inaugurator of the new motel era in Israel, the Investment and Tourist Centre Ltd., is located at the El Al Building, 32 Ben Yehuda Street, Tel-Aviv.
BOAC Will Have Super VCW Flights Daily To Europe
On February 28 the first regularly-scheduled flight of the Super VC10, will leave Montreal for London. The event is of great importance because it marks the beginning of a new era for Canadian aviation.
Not since the initial days of the Comet 4 jetliner and before that the "Whispering Giant" Britannia turboprop has there been a British airliner capable of matching in a world already well used to big jets.
The revolutionary Super VC10 will "give the Canadian traveller just what he wants power, elegance,
speed, efficiency; in a product of three of the most formidable organizations in aviation Vickers, Rolls-Royce and BOAC.
BOAC was the first airline to operate a jet; and the Super VC10 is an airliner capable of carrying up to 140 passengers at speeds up to 600 mph across the 3,500-mile Atlantic, and still have fuel reserved to fly on 1,-000 or more miles.
Its four huge Rolls-Royce engines are tucked behind the passenger cabin and the noise of the immense power they generate is lost in space behind the aircraft as it surges through the air.
From February 28 the Super VC10 will operate thrice weekly Montreal to London; from April 5, the aircraft will operate daily except Friday and Sunday; and from April 24, it will operate daily.
On February 28, BOAC moves five years ahead. The Super VC10 starts transatlantic flights from Montreal to London.
Triumphantly swift, silent, serene.
Until now, all transatlantic jets have had their engines on the wings. Now comes the first really big "second generation,, transatlantic jet. It's totally different from any big jet now Hying, The engines are in the tail. This way the wings are left clean, so they lift better. (The BOAC Super VCIOgets olTthe ground almost 2sc'c quicker than anything now flying the North Atlantic. And it lands over 20 mph slower.) The jets are bigger. They're grown-up versions of the Rolls-Royce Conway tan jet. (In fact, they're the most powerful airline engines in the world.) And. with the four jets
in the rear, the cabin is astonishingly quiet. You can talk without raising your voice. Even the air you breathe is different in the Super YCI0. It's the first aircraft to be totally air-conditioned. (Never gets stuffy when you're waiting on the ground.) And then there's the new BOAC Super YC10 seat. For the first time you gel lots of legroom. even in economy class. But don't take our word for it. Take the BOAC Super YCI0 to Britain. February 28, the first one leaves Montreal for London. Thereafter, several services weekly. Daily from April 24. See your Travel Agent.
All over the world BOAC takes good care of you
