training to more than 15,000 persons through ORT schools. JDC's traditional Passover distributed in eleven European countries over 300,000 pounds of matzoth, matzoh meal, and fats. Thousands of youngsters were provided with summer vacations, another of JDC's special projects.
Mr. Leavitt also noted the continuation of JDC's efforts to establish Jewish centers throughout Europe as a step towards the revitalization of Jewish commun-al life on the continent Since "1954 in twelve european coun-tries, Mr. Leavitt reported, funds provided by JDC and the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany have helped to establish 60 community adult and youth centers, costing a total of $3,400,000. Mr. Leavitt hailed the progress toward self ^sufficiency of local Jewish! communities in Europe, pointing out that they had raised $1,400,000 toward construction of the centers.
Mr. Warburg paid particular tribute to the field workers who . serve JDC's far-flung-programs: "They have seen the faces of fear and the sounds of weeping. They have heard the guns grow silent, only to hear the cries of the wounded continue more loudly in the stillness. They have seen the oppressor pass Away, but have seen the broken bodies of his victims left as a bequest to the world, not dead, but not living. They have seen_the_ walls- of Dachau-torn down and destroyed, but years after, in far-off places, they have found and met, and spoken with, the little bits and pieces of Dachau which still survive. Suffering they have seen and sorrow beyond easing, and despair. But also joy. And happiness, and fulfillment The joy of a child with a pair of new. shoes, and a meal to ease her hunger. The happiness of a mother who knows finally that her son will live/ because the life-saving drugs have come. The fulfillment of men and women as they look about them amazed at the land which is to be their home, as the fear drops from them, as their shoulders grow straight and they laugh for the first time the joyous laugh of free men. All these joys have they seen, the men and women who serve us, who serve JDC and the American Jewish community. All these joys have they seen; and that is their reward. As it is ours. For if we give joy, we also share it."
James H. Becker, chairman of the JDC National Council, said that members of the National Council, leaders of Jewish communities from coast to coast are largely responsible for the continued and warm acceptance by
