A The seventh annual State of Israel Bond drive in Saint John, N.B., ended in a testimonial dinner to Mitchell S. Bernstein and Mitchell Franklin, co-chairmen of the past four years. Joshua Lie-berman is chairman: Abram I. Garson, honourarv chairman, of the campaign. The dinner was in the ballroom of the Admiral Beatty Hotel. .The closing dinner in Fredericton took place in the main ballroom of the Lord Beaver-brook Hotel. Jack Budovitch is. chairman of the campaign. In Yarmouth Irving Pink, Q. C. heads the campaign for the third consecutive year, assisted by Lester Pink and Myer Abraham, representing�the Synagogue__and.
the men's organizations in the community; and by Mrs. I. Pink and Mrs. L. Pink, for women's groups. The Honourable William Hamilton, P.C., Postmaster General of Canada, Was the guest speaker in Saint John and in Fredericton. Mr. Hamilton was accompanied by his wife and they addressed a luncheon for non-Jewish friends and purchasers of Israel Bonds in Fredericton. Saint John women's activities are headed by. Mrs. J. M. Franklin, as honourary chairman; Mrs. J. J. Freedman, chairman. In both cities in previous years as much as twenty-five percent of the campaign total represented sales to non-Jewish purchasers. Sales of Israel Bonds in Saint John have brought in close to $400,000 during the past six years. Yarmouth, during four campaigns, has brought in more than $50,000 for a community of about twenty-eight Jewish familic

Farband Scholarship Awards for excellence in Hebrew, Yiddish, or Jewish subjects have been established in nine universities throughout the United States, through the cooperation of youth branches of the Farband Labor Zionist Order in key cities. This years, the prizes were presented at the University of California at Los Angeles; Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island; Brandeis University, in Waltham, Massachusetts; and Columbia University, City College, Hunter College, Brooklyn College, and Queens College; all in New York. A Farband Hebrew Award has also been instituted at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, and will be presented for the first "Time at the conclusion ofthe 1959^~ 1960 academic year.

one cup shortening, five eggs
two and one-half cups
cake flour one teaspoon baking soda two teaspoons vanilla two cups sugar
four one-ounce squares of melted unsweetened chocolate
one-half teaspoon salt
one cup sour milk or buttermilk
one cup coarsely broken walnuts
Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. Add cooled melted chocolate. Add all dry ingredients, which have been sifted together three times; alternating with sour milk and vanilla; beginning and ending with flour mixture. Stir in crushed walnuts. Pour batter in three, wax paper-lined, nine-inch layer-cake pans; and bake at 350-degree for thirty minutes, or until top is firm to the touch. When cool, spread layers, and frost cake with seven-minute frosting.

He belonged also to the Mac-Dowell Association, the Ameri-
can Society of Composers, Au thors and Publishers, and the Peterborough (N. H.) Colony.
Mr. Saminsky's first wife, Mrs. Lillian Morgan Saminsky, a poet and novelist, died in 1946. In 1948 he married Jennifer Gandar who survives.

one-half cup poppy seeds Beat eggs and sugar. Add oil, orange juice, and poppy seeds. Sift flour, baking powder and salt, and add to the mixture to form a cookie dough. Roll out dough and cut with cookie cutter. Place cookies on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for twenty minutes until brown.
