Born in Romania, he came to Canada at the age of sixteen years. He entered the fur business and by 1910, a little more than a decade after his arrival here, he had set up his own firm under the name of H. Herman and Company. At the time of his death Mr. Herman had been in retirement for some time. He was a member of Beth David-Beth Yitzchok-Kehal Yes-hurun Synagogue; a founder of the Hebrew Malbish Arumim Society; and a life member of Ionic Lodge of the Masonic Order.
