Brussels Home For Aged
Government officials, civic and welfare leaders, and prominent members of the Jewish community of Brussels, Belgium, took part in a ceremony laying the cornerstone for a new wing of the Jewish Home for the Aged in the borough of St. Gilles. The home is under the patronage of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth of Belgium. Among the speakers at the ceremony were Gideon Rafael, Israeli Ambassador to Belgium, and Rabbi Marc Kah-lenberg, Chief Rabbi of Brussels.
A leading Brussels merchant, Simon Haim, contributed five million Belgian francs ($100,000) for
wood Avenue. The godparents are Mr. and Mrs. Seymour Alper, Victoria Avenue, uncle and aunt. Edward Alper, grandfather, held the baby during the ceremony.

The balance of the funds is being provided the Joint Distribution Committee, which is the major agency serving welfare and educational needs of Jews overseas, the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, and the Jewish community of Brussels. The total cost of the construction is estimated at 21,950,000 Belgian francs ($439,-000) and it is expected to be finished by 1960.
The new 60-bed wing is to be erected adjacent to the original home on land bought for the purpose. Of ultra-modern construction, it will leave ample space for
frardens around the building. Its ayout and equipment will facilitate the use of the latest techniques in caring for aged persons, based on research in the psychology of the aged.
When completed the home will provide for the care of 90 to 95 elderly people. The new wing will house 60 residents, mostly in single rooms, and will also include recreation rooms, dining room, and facilities for occupational therapy. The original building is currently being remodeled to care for 30 to 35 infirm aged and will also contain offices, staff quarters, kitchen, and laundry and heating .equipment _
The home at present accommodates 56 persons, including 43 women and 13 men. Most are 65 years of age or older, the average are being 77. Twenty-five are former DPs or refugees under the protection of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. Among these are six who came to Belgium from Shanghai under special arrangements with the Belgian government The proportion of aged among the 20,000 Jewish population of Brussels is estimated at 12 per cent, or about 2,500, a percentage slightly higher than for the general population of the city. Those not living in institutions are assisted by the A.I.V.G. in regard to housing, home help for the sick, medical caTe, and cash relief.
