CANADIAN JEWRY, 200 YEARS OLD
^e^^^a_M__________________meeiWmm__nw__
BY SAUL HAYES, OF MONTREAL, NATIONAL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE CANADIAN JEWISH CONGRESS
Canadian Jewry is now 200 years old. To signalize this, the community, through the Canadian Jewish Congress, will appropri-ately commemorate the anniversary. There is nothing particularly distinguished in achieving another birthday since time and time alone is the catalyst. A commemoration in and of itself records nothing but the passage of years from birth to a figure that seems to possess some magic. However, if, over a period of time, achievements can be duly recorded then birthdays, anniversaries, and other milestones have significance.
Why should Canadian Jewry be joyful about 200 years of continuous settlement? Can it boast of lasting works of literature and scholarship? Will it leave to posterity a corpus of religious tracts or ethical commentaries or philnsn-
elapsed from the days of its origin. If Canadian Jewry has no Sura or Pumbaditha, it may be that it will have, if we nurture- Cana^ dian Jewry to think of these matters of the heart and soul.
Why then celebrate 200 years? It is not a defensive question, but one that has been asked. Canadian Jewry has a proud record of 2C0. years of toil and perseverance, of settlement and building, of trial and error, and of assisting fellow Canadians in forging a Canadian nation. It has introduced industries, it has helped T)uild the West. Its native sons have distinguished themselves in almost all fields. It has given its heroes to fight the battles for democracy and the salvation of free institutions._____________________

In reciting the achievements of Canadian Jewry, one would record interesting chapters of an important history book but it would also be a series of biographies of exceptional leaders who pledged themselves to the reci ealion of institutions based on the traditions of Judaism.

The Canadian Jewish Congress, at this time, is celebrating 40 years since its establishment in 1919, and 25 years since its reorganization in 1934. It is impossible to assess the value to the Jewish community of the Canadian Jewish Congress in recent years without paying specific tribute to Samuel Bronfman. For 20 years he has been the talented and devoted President of Congress, whose direction of its affairs has earned him the praise not only of his fellow Canadians, but of Jews throughout the world.
Jle has had of course, the assistance of many wise counsellors,
Lyon Cohen, Nathan Gordon, A. J. Freiman, Samuel Jacobs, Q.C., M.P., and great industrialists and philanthropists such as Sir Mortimer Davis, and Mark Workman. It has had distinguished teachers and rabbis, and the de Solas, while best known, are not the only en-
