The Jewish Prayer Is For Peace
At The New Year
by allan bronfman, of montreal, national president of the canadian friends of
the hebrew university
lrre peoples of the world today more perhaps than ever before in history have but a single prayer, a prayer from depth of heart that 5s synonymous with the spirit, df Rosh Hashonah. The Prayer, ho matter in what ian-gUage it Is Uttered can be condensed into but one word, "peace". Not merely "peace in our time*', but "peace now and forever.*'
All around Us the symbols of war unfortunately outshine the* symbols df peace. The super-speed jet fighter captures greater -public attention-than-the develop-
ment of a safer technique in a complicated surgical field. The awesome destruction of _a mushrooming atomic detonation is more impressive than a display of atomic energy harnessed for peaceful purposes.
The eve of Rosh Hashonah motivates within the Jewish conscience a spirit of search, a spirit of self-examination and rededi-eation. The "Jaw" and "peace" have been synonymous and yet to uphold dignity and freedom the Jew in Israel has had to fight, to clash, to be on guard. Although they would prefer not to fight,
noirtoiiaveto defendpthis-luxury cannot be at the price of peace, and in our traditional Rosh Hashonah self-appraisal we cannot help but admire and be proud of our people's courage, strength, and determination to hold high their precious right to ^gnity and peace.
In every community, in every nation there are institutions which given peace and support hold the key to a greater, a brighter future for all humanity and these are, of course, the universities throughout-the-worlcL Jews-^veryr. where have reason to be proud of Israel's national university, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, for its phenomenal growth in all
_ fields (medicine, law, jhe hjimani-ties, science, agriculture, education, economic and the social sciences) has without doubt been the spearhead of a rapidly developing
~TsraeT~and a stronger, healthier Jewish people. Wherever one journeys in the length and breadth of this tiny but remarkable land, in the busy cities or the clean-white settlements, in the barren Negev or through the green of the Jez-reel Valley, it is evident that the
bright, warm sun of the Hebrew University's professional training and research has shone here. ^JJhe Hebrew University, rising gracefully and splendidly in the heart of modern Jerusalem, stands out.as a symbol of peace and a better tomorrow for Jewry and indeed all mankind.T The work
being done by its*5,000 students and researchers is vital to the very future of Israel and its inhabitants.
These students and researchers are living symbols of our hopes for the Jewish people, a Jewish people in Israel who will call upon every untapped reservoir of energy with which to advance the development of their infant nation ever further, ever higher, ever deeper. A Jewish people outside of Israel who will realize that to be complacent is to jeopardize the dream, a Jewish people outside of Israel who must work even more fervently and vigorously thah~in ^the l>ast~to help their brothers-shoulder the burden of building ajid~defending"the Jewish nation-which may very well be at the crucible of civilization's peace in our day.
MaTy^we-ail 1rave a New Year of prosperity and progress, and the happiness and inner satisfaction that comes from the knowledge that we are privileged to play a personal even though small yet vital role in a better tomorrow.
We Who Are Zionists
by lawrence freiman, of ottawa, ontario, president of the zionist organization
of canada
Once again Jews throughout the world open the portals of their hearts to the promise and mystery of a New Year. The millenial tradition of our people enjoins that as we usher in the New Year, we take time for self-examination. This -ancient obligation binds us not only in our private lives but in our public capacities. We who are Zionists must give account to ourselves not only as individuals but as custodians of the aspirations enshrined in our historic movement.
We may offer grateful thanks for the tenacity and sense of purpose which have enabled our movement to emerge unscathed-from
a time of perplexity and vacillation. I believe that this period of hesitancy, doubt and indecision is now behind us and that we see more clearly than we have for many years that the Zionist movement, sprung as it has from the deepest and most tender needs of the Jewish people, is* proof against temporary fluctuations of time and circumstance.
Let us resolve to demonstrate in the months before us that the vision of an ancient people of its rebirth in its ancestral land has been given flesh and substance in our days. Let us show that the Zionist message has grandeur and relevance not only for Jews in Is-
rael reborn hut for Jews throughout the world, indeed, for men and women of all faiths and creeds everywhere.
The Zionist torch was not lit by us and it may not be our prize to carry it to its final goal. Ours is the responsibility to cherish the flame, to preserve it, and to hand it in our turn to our sons and daughters. In this task let us stand and work together.
