This is one of the many Jewish folk-stories recorded by Dr. Dov Noy, who, besides teaching Hebrew Literature at the Hebrew University, is also carrying out research in Jewish folklore on a Warbftrg Fellowship granted him by thc\ University. In addition, he is diredtbrof the Ethnological Museum arid Folklore Archives run by the Municipality in Haifa, and it is here that the above story found its appropriate end. For five generations the parochet remained in the hands of the Luria family, who took it with them on their odyssey through many lands. Then one day they presented it to the Museum, where, on examination, it was indeed found to be a French Army coat of the Napoleonic era, with the Emperor's initials on it still clearly visible.
Jewish folk tales have been a source of endless fascination to Dr. Noy ever since his childhood in Poland, and in his student days at the Hebrew University he found himself adding to his already rich and varied collection of them. His studies of Jewish history for the Master's degree
