The 12th anniversary of the State of Israel and the observance of the centennial of the birth of Dr. Theodor Herzl, the founder of Zionism, were celebrated at a rally at Young Israel Synagogue under auspices of the Eastern Region, and sponsored by: Achdut Avo-dah, and national: Hadassah Organization, Labor Zionist Movement, Mizrachi Hapoel Hamiz-rachi Organization, Canadian Young Judea, Zionist Men's Association, Zionist Organization. Rabbi Irving Miller, chairman of the American Zionist Council, which represents all organized Zionist parties in America, was the chief speaker. Service was first held with Rabbi S. M. Zam-browsky, national chairman of Mizrachi, in the pulpit. The 40-voice Hadassah Choir, leadership of Yehuda Vineberg, sang a medley of Israeli songs. Mrs. Myer Sager, Montreal Hadassah president, introduced the group. Israel's Declaration of Independence was read by A. Katz, chairman of Achdut Avodah. A short musical recital was given by the McGill Faculty Trio, directed by Alexander Brott. The Brig. Kisch Group 97,- Canadian Legion, conducted a flag ceremony that included the trooping of the Israeli flag with the Union Jack and the Canada Ensign. Other speakers were: Fred Packer, chairman of the Eastern Region, who was celebration chairman; Adin Talbar, Acting Consul General for Israel; Cyril E. Schwisberg, president, 'Zionist Men's Association, who introduced the guest speaker; Leon Kronitz, chairman of the national executive of the Labor Zionist Movement, who thanked the speaker, Rabbi Miller.

Council award of five $40 scholarships to winners of an essay contest on "The Rights And Duties Of Canadian Citizens", held among the pupils of the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal, wUl take place at a ceremony at City Hall on Citizenship Day, May 20. T..G. Sevigny, chairman of the special events committee, said that it is hoped to include pupils of all Montreal schools in future contests. Among the winners were: Guita Maritzer, of Sir Arthur Currie School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Maritzer, 5312 Macmahon Street; and Murray Finkelstein, of Somerled School, Grade VII, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Finkelstein, 5224 Cumberland Avenue. Layy M. Becker, chairman of the national bicentenary of Canadian Jewry, sponsored by the Congress, was the speaker at a bicentenary meeting in the Jewish Community Centre of Windsor, Ontario, which ended in a series of events starting, with the unveiling of a plaque at 282 Pitt Street East, to mark the site of the first synagogue there. M. M. Sumner, David Meretsky, Rabbi Samuel S. Stoll-man, and Rabbi Shmeryahu Kare-litz participated. His Worship, Michael J. Patrick, was presented with the proclamation. Bicentenary Sabbath services were held in all Windsor synagogues. Eli C. Goldin, presided at the closing function. Others participating were: Myer Dorn, chairman of the bicentenary committee; Alderman and Mrs. Cameron H. Montrose, Rubin Madoff, Arthur Weingar-ten, J. D. Geller, J. Kligman, Mel Sorffer, H. R. Schwartz. Arthur G. Bezaire, of Club Richelieu, and Andre St. Pierre, of Centre Canadien-Francais and Societe St. Jean Baptiste, were present, for the French-Canadian community. Arthur Zalev and Samuel Schwartz read the proclamation in Hebrew and English. Gerald Freed, Alan Orman, and Mrs. Gerald Freed dramatized "The Member From Three Rivers". Sheldon Schwartz and Zelda Kriapp, of the Peretz Shule, accompanied by Shulamith Kligman, sang "Pride And Joy". The bicentenary committee was: Joseph Eisenberg, Jacob D. Geller, Eli C. Alderman Bernard Miller presided at a bicentenary meeting at Beth-El Congregation, in Cornwall. Julius Miller, president, read the proclamation. Special prayer books commemorating the bicentenary were donated by the president, and distributed to each Jewish child in Cornwall, in memory of Mrs. Julius Miller and her mother, Mrs. J. J. Phillips. A bicentenary movie was shown. Mayor L. G. Lavigne was presented with the bicentenary proclamation.
