grated juice and rind of one
lemon three teaspoons baking
powder one cup dates
RACING
Cream butter and sugar and blend well. Add beaten egg, grated lemon, juice and rind. Add flour, baking powder, and salt which have been sifted together twice. Add dates cut in small pieces and soaked in a cup of hot water. Pour batter into a slightly greased nine-Inch tube pan. Bake in 350 degree oven for one hour. One-third cup chopped nuts may be included,

gravy, leftover or tinned
Mix the chopped onion and green pepper, salt, pepper, and meat in a greasea casserole. Pour the gravy on top and spread with mashed potatoes. Bake for one-half an hour at 350 degrees.

In his president's report, Mr. Kanigsberg stated that 152 applications were received by this institution during the last year, of which 101 patients had spent a duration of time at the centre. 9% of the patients were indigent cases who made no payment whatsoever; 69% were accommodated on a basis of partial payment; or under the jurisdiction of Q.P.C.A.; and the balance were able to pay full rates. Patients were sent from private physicians, the Jewish General Hospital, Montreal General Hospital, Royal Victoria Hospital, Jewish Immigrant Aid Society. City of Montreal, Department of Social Welfare; City of Outre-mont, Department of Social Welfare; Ready Memorial Hospital; Montreal Convalescent Hospital; and the Federal Department of Immigration. Mrs. J. Libben, chairman of the Women's Council, announced that the Women's Council had turned over $9,700 to the Convalescent Centre.

those awarded fellowships to the National Camp Leadership Institute of the National Ramah Commission, a specialized educational program to train superior and unusually gifted college freshmen in Jewish education and community leadership preparatory to appointment on the staff of one of the five Hebrew-speaking Ramah camps, are: Miss Judith Richler, 607 Kenas-ton Avenue; and Marvin Schech-ter, 708 Johnson Avenue, in recognition of their outstanding academic background as well as their voluntary service to the community. They will be among 47 young men and women from throughout the United States and Canada to attend Camp Ramah in the Poconos, at Lake Como, Pennsylvania, this summer. The ' program of study will include Jewish classical texts, educational theory, group psychology and leadership. The program is designed, in part, to accelerate the training of young men and women for the staffs of the rapidly expanding Camp Ramah system. The five existing camps are located in Connecticut. Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, California, and in Ontario. Part of the educational program of The Jewish Theological Seminary of America, in New York, the camps are under the educational supervision of the Seminary's Teachers Institute. They are operated by local committees in association with regional organizations of the United Synagogue of America.

Of America: Rabbi Mendell Lew-ittes, spiritual leader of Young Israel of Montreal, and president of the Montreal Region of the Rabbinical Council, has been appointed co-chairman with Rabbi Walter Wurzburger, of Shaarei Shomayim Synagogue, in Toronto, Ont., of the annual convention of the Rabbinical Council, in Ste. Agathe, from Monday, June 27 to Thursday, June 30. This convention, which will bring together hundreds of orthodox rabbis from all parts of the United States and Canada, is the first to be held in Canada and will feature a special session devoted to the problems of traditional Jewish life on the Canadian Scene. Official greetings to this rabbinic meeting, representing the largest body of Jewish spiritual leaders on the American continent, will be extended by Rabbi S. Herschorn, chairman of the Montreal Council of Orthodox Rabbis; and by Saul Haves, executive vice-president of the Canadian Jewish Congress. Rabbi M. Halpern, of Beth Ora, in St. Laurent, and Rabbi S. Spiro, of St. Martin, will serve as the official secretariat of the convention; and Rabbi I. Rosner of Val Royal and Rabbi L. Rosner, of Beth Hamedrash Hagadol, in Montreal, are in charge of technical arrangements. Rabbi Ema-nuel Rackman of New York, national president, will deliver the annual report at the opening session on Monday evening, and Rabbi Dr. Joseph Soloveitchik, Professor of Talmud and Jewish Philosophy of Yeshiva University, will be the guest speaker on Tuesday evening. The theme of the convention will be: "Intensifying The Religious Experience Of The Modern Jew."
