Any attempt to sketch a rough sociological picture of the contemporary American Jewish family as distinct from other American family groups must begin by observing that the differences are not as great as the similarities. The weeping social and economic changes of our times have affected American families of all faiths.
Such developments as the increasing number of working wives and mothers and the vast movement to the suburbs, to name just two, have cut across faith lines. To the degree that families of every religion and ethnic background are confronted with the same problems and anxieties some of them age-old and common to every generation, some the result of recent events we are more alike than different.
Nevertheless, distinctions can be made. Although there are few studies based on Jewish family units as such, we can offer generalizations based on the findings of Jewish population studies and ^clinical and experimental studies on Jewish individuals and groups.

Statistically, what are some of the characteristics of the American Jewish family?
First, the American Jewish family is likely to reside in or near a large city. (Slightly over 87.4 percent of American Jews over the age of 14 live in urbanized areas of 250,000 population or more as compared to 53.9 per cent of Roman Catholics and 24.5 per cent of white Protestants.) As a unit, the American Jewish family is smaller than its Roman Catholic and Protestant counterparts, and the parents, on the average, are somewhat older.
These factors are interrelated. The birth rate in urban areas is lower than in rural areas for all Americans, and especially lower in certain occupational fields (clerical, sales, managerial and professional). Since Jews tend to be concentrated in urban areas, and in those occupations yielding, the lowest fertility rates, they reflect these influences to a greater degree than other religious groups. The Jewish fertility rate is only 79 per cent of the national average.
These features (older parents and fewer children) of current Jewish family life in America represent a great departure. Earlier in the century, American Jews and those in Eastern Europe from where most American Jews had recently emigrated married younger and had larger families. If there is a rough: historical parallel to the statistics of older parents and fewer children, it is with Jewish communities in prewar Western Europe. However, a major difference within this parallel is the continued low intermarriage rate which distinguishes Jewish family life in this country.
