OH, TO BE IN GRADE ONE WITH MOTHER VOLUNTEERS HELPING TEACHER!
The Toronto Globe and Mail says: Volunteers have moved into the classroom at Flcmington Road Public School: Mrs. Allen Roscnthal, vice-president of the National Council of Jewish Women, Toronto section, said that five volunteers arc working with Grade 1 students at the school.
"They're not doing the teacher's work, but they're helping in the things the teacher doesn't have time to do."
The women, who have received some training, spend time with the children who need extra help. They visit twice a week.
"Often, they just lend an car," she said. At one point during the school year, volunteers took small groups of girls into the washroom, gave tliCDi hair ribbons, and showed them how to do their hair.
"So this way, they learned a little about grooming as well," Mrs. Rosen-thai said. The Student Aid program is a pilot project and was one of several services described at the annual meeting of the National Council of Jewish ^/omen.
