The village Hacham (Sephardic rabbi) crossed the street which was noisy with Sabbath afternoon strollers. Ever so often a wagon would pasft by; it was driven by a fellow in holiday dress on his way to a Sabbath inspection of his field. Droves of children were racing their bicycles over the paved road.
The Hacham tried to turn his mind away from the youth desecrating the Sabbath in public. Even when they greeted him with a "Shabbath Shalom," he wasn't satisfied. He couldn't quite stand these youngsters, strolling along on Sabbath with a transistor radio in hand, coupling together at weddings in dances they'd learned from some "course" in the nearby town.
You simply couldn't recognize them. They'd all turned arrogant and unmannered. They were independent now, all earning their own living, and rather than have them ask their fathers for money it was now the fathers who on occasion were almost obliged to beg money from their sons, God forbid.
There were rumours, too, in those movies to which the young people were never tired of running, immoral women were actually being exhibited against a wall. Why, only this week the rabbi was travelling with his own son by bus, and when the son pulled out his purse to pay for the fare^a whole array of naked female beauties was revealed under the glossy nylon lining.
' Back home he later tried to reproach his son. But the young man replied, "That's the way it is these
" days. Every one does just as he pleases. And why not?"
The rabbi was holding a conference with himself. How far should he go in making concessions for the sake of domestic peace? He
, really did not have much of a choice, for he was unable to stem the tide that kept on surging around him. Yet he could not quite admit to himself that in the eyes
*of thi youngeV generation he was already a figure from a by-gone age. They were no longer ready to listen to his lengthy moral tales studded with quotations which could not always be identified.
The Hacham was, in fact, making an effort to understand the new way of life practised here, in the Holy Land. Few were the people in the village who realized that by rendering honour to the Torah they were honouring themselves. Now every one had his own "Torah" : the instructor, the doctor, the teacher, and just anyone. In vain had the rabbi tried to find a common language with the new pow-

erg-that-be. He wasn't even sure that tHey weren't mocking him behind his back.
For all that, the Hacham still had. three friends, who used to follow him wherever he went, sort of an honorary bodyguard, three tall and big guys, thank God. One of these "giants," a fellow by the name of Shelomo, was a distant relative of the Hacham, in fact had spent some time with him at school years ago. Shelomo's wife, Blnafsha, was also a relative, a wise woman was she, and a fine housewife to boot.
Even more unusual at this age when wives had gotten the nerve to cross their husbands, she greatly respected her man, was well liked by her neighbours, feared Godand what eh?e did a woman need? Alas, she had poor luck with procreation . . . Although she bore children regularly, year in and year out, each one of her offspring would sooner or later pass away.
What hadn't they contrived to do to ward off the sundry devils I The Hacham's father, years ago, had already supplied Binafsha with amulets and magic potions. She even went with the children to "their" witch doctors. But nothing availed her. She turned* old while still in her prime and started dyeing her hair to conceal the grey-ness.
Now she was left with only little Moshe, the last of her many children. She hadn't clipped his hair because she vowed to make a burnt offering of it at the grave of Rabbi Shimon Bar-Yohai when they ar-

rived in Israel. Oil had been bought to be poured over the sacred bonfire, and a great deal of money had been distributed among the poor.
And, indeed, thanks to this vow Moshe came to grow up in Israel, and even reached school age. Several years passed before Binafsha finally acquiesced in the teacher's demand that she take all those amulets off her son, and remove all those "hands" suspended around his neck and sewn into his clothesalthough not all at once, just in case.
One day the village nurse bumped into Binafsha walking with Moshe, tapped the boy lightly on his red cheek, and said, "See, now, he's healthy all right even without all that junk you used to hang around his neckl So where've all the devils gone all of a sudden?" BinafBha chuckled happily. "There're no devils in Israel. Here, thank God, there's electricity."
Suddenly the wheel of fortune turned. Early in the winter Moshe caught a cold and ran a high fever. Even after he got out of bed and went back to school he still kept complaining about aches and pains, and developed a fondness for lying in bed, which was quite unlike a child. Even the teacher who came to visit him once at home described him as a quiet boy, even too quiet, who used to complain of pains even in class.
The nurse and the doctor both got interested in him and started taking his temperature morning and evening. Finally they sent him to the hospital in Jerusalem, so that some big-time specialist could examine him. Moshe came back from Jerusalem with a cut on hi3 throat; he had been operated upon.
