Expert Sees Growth Of love And Marriage Problems
Love, a psychologist said at St. Louis, Missouri, is the "royal road" to understanding, but most people seem to be off on very bumpy detours. Those who truly love, Dr. Walter J. Coville told the National Catholic Family Life convention, do so with their "whole personalities."
"However," said Dr. Coville, chief of clinical psychological services at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City, reports the New York Times, "Loving with one's total personality seems to be a relatively rare phenomenon today since partners in love and in marriage experience so many difficulties in their adjustments."
And, he said, analysis of these difficulties reveals many basic incompatibilities that are overlooked in the popular, cultural misconceptions concerning love. As a practicing clinical psychologist, Dr. Coville said he had ample opportunity to observe and study husbands and wives in marital difficulties. He said he was impressed often with some of the following foibles:
The naivete of young people about the true nature of love. The common acceptance of physical compatibility as the sign of true love. The frequency with which marriage was contracted on bases other than love. How easily the relationship deteriorated after marriage. The little faith that husband and wife had in each other and their low tolerance for pain and disappointment. The tenacious pursuit of the insignificant and superficial problems of daily living as causes of the unhappiness and the lack of insight into basic causes of incompatibilities, hostilities, and resentments. The immaturity of behavior and the frequency with which their backgrounds revealed childhood-disturbed love relationships.
With all these faults, these couples did not actually seek failure in marriage, Dr. Coville said. They simply failed to be aware of their basic maladjustments, often suffered in poor love relationships with parents, or through the framework of confusion placed around the subject in the age in which they live.
"This modern age," he said, "is conducive to distorting and even destroying the essential values of life. It is an age characterized by automation, speed, Atomic energy, and space conquest; life is short, bat ft can be made even shorter by atomic saH; success, measured by Material possessions,, personal status, or prestife, most be achieved in a tarry; sensual pleasures are tariffed aad moral taWMUoos are looted to assure Immediate satisfaction."
