Says Louis Jacobs on Return from J5 Sojourn Abroad
Y. M. and Y. W\ HA.
> v
Toronto Jewish merchants will be -interested to know from Louis Jacobs, who, recently returned from a six weeks trip to France and England, flews Of the business world across the sea:.
Mr. Jacobs, who is of the firm of J. and G. Garment Company, said that clothes of Canadian make are largely in demand in England and that there is an important market there for Canadian export business. He told the Canadian Jewish Rbview inter* viewer that he was much impressed with the desire of English merchants to modernize their businesses and to improve the appearance of stores along Canadian and American lines. Attractive window displays that denote the mercantile influence of this continent upon the older one, are being used extensively, Mr. Jacobs said.
"A bright outlook prevails in the business section of England to-day," said the Torontonian. "It is due to the fact that merchants have gradually accepted present conditions and no one expects a drop-back to pre-war levels. As a result there is greater business activity and more even production."
Although England has its problem of unemployment, as has every^ other country right now, it is struggling to adjust matters to the best of its ability.
Mr. Jacobs was much impressed with the faultless courtesy of the old-world people he met, and found time to admire the beautiful architecture of France and JEngland, and whatever is picturesque in those countries.
WANTEDLEADERS
There are over two thousand Jewish boys in Toronto. Five hundred of these are under Christian leaders in Christian institutions.
Two thousand Jewish boys need Jewish leaders who will help develop their characters, help make of them good Jews and good Canadians, such that we all will^. be proud of. To be a good leader, one needs to be trained for it. This training develops executive ability. It teaches the handling of boys, and one who can manage boys can manage men. It instructs how to be a chum to one's oWn boys when the responsibility of fatherhood comes. The training is provided without cost. It means one evening a week. For further particulars communicate with Mr. M. M. Cohen, President of Jewish Boy Life Council, 87 King St. E., 'phone Main 2189, or at 99 Madison Ave., Apt. 11, or 'phone Hillcrest 2840W.

The ladies of the Beach Auxiliary will present the Beach Institute, 109 Ke nil worth, with a Torah on Sunday, January 8. Arrangements have not been fully completed.
The athletic activities of the Y.M. and Y.W.H.A. art rapidly getting under way. The organization for handling the various activi^tes has been completed. The following have beep appointed by J. A. Landsberg, the athletic convener:
Boxing, H. Freeman. Basketball, G, Lister. Bowling and Billiards. M. Brady, J. A Landsberg, Volleyball and Handball, M. Levy. Hockey, H. Free-
man. Wrestling, C. Bloom. Baseball, H. Freeman. Rugby, I. A Landsberg. Swimming, S. Mendelsoru Ladies' Bowling and Basketball, Miss R. Manilla.
A boxing class is now being formed. Thifi class will meet twice a week when lessons in" elementary and advanced boxing will be given by Mr. Free mad. The boxing equipment has already been purchased so that the first lesson will probably be given this week. A boxing exhibition will be staged each month, and a large inter-club tournament will be held later on in the season.
Under the energetic leadership of Mr. G. Lister, the T' will not lack interesting basketball games. Entries are now being received from the various Jewish clubs for the "Y.M.H.A." Inter-club Basketball League. This league is open to all the Jewish clubs in the city, regardless of whether they are "Y" members or not. The winner of this league will gain possession of the handsome Granatstein Trophy, now held by the Hebrew Literary arid Athletic Club. The "Y" members will also be given a chance to play basketball in the House League. The "Y.M.H.A." basketball teams will make their debut in outside competition whenthey compete in the Central Y.M.C.A. Christ mas Tournament. Three teams, 95 pounds, 125 pounds and 135 pound teams, have been entered.
Continuing the policy inaugurated last year, the Lipson Trophy for Bowling will again be contested for. This year the "Y" is very fortunate in having five new bowling alleys in their own building and these will be available for the tournament. The Perkins Trophy for billiards will also be competed for. Both the Bowling and Billiard Tournaments will be open to all Jewish clubs in the city.
Mr. Freeman has entered a Y.M.H.A. hockey team in the Western City League. All the necessary equipment, such as sweaters, stockings, pads, etc., has been ordered. All prospective players are being lined up and as soon as ice is available the team-will get off to a flying start.
The wrestlers have begun to toss each other around; twice a week C. Bloom is on hand to help the boys along with the necessary instruction. For those not interested in the more strenuous sports, M. Levy is organizing volleyball and handball teams from among the members. Volleyball is comparatively a newcomer in the field of Jewish sports^ but judging from the interest shown in the games played after classes, this game will soon rank in popularity with the older sports.
The gym. floor is now the center,of attraction. Each afternoon and evening regular gym. classes are held, under capable instructors. When these classes are not being held, the floor is used for instruction in boxing, wrestling and for the volleyball and basketball games. Due to the large number of classes, the auditorium will have to be used to take care of the overflow.
The ladies' activities are n yet in full swing, but the committee hopes to start an interclub basketball and bowling league shortly.
The Y.M. and YiW.H.A. Athletic Dance will be held on December 28th in the Auditorium. This dance will serve the double purpose of getting the athletes together and raising the necessary funds to finance the various activities. , .
