Bnai Brith Heart Morgenthau
Over three hundred, members and their friends heard* Mr. Henjry Mqr-genthau on Monday evening, October 16, at a meeting of the Bnai .Brith lodge. The president, Nathan Phillips, introduced the speaker as one of the three men whom the I.O.B.B. had honored with a gold medal.
"Everywhere I travelled, I found Bnai Brith lodges with a welcome for me," said the speaker. "At Cairo, they were present with flowers and candies for my wife and daughter. Unknowingly, I threw a bomb-shell into their midst in Cairo. There are two I.O.B.B. lodges there and apparently they are not top friendly. As I had little time at my disposal, I suggested that they meet jointly to hear my address. After consultation, they decided to meet. I have never witnessed a finer meeting anywhere. I later found out that this was the beginning of better relations between the two lodges. In Jerusalem, I also found a lodge with members wearing red fezzes, all representatives of various countries."
Mr. Morgenthau went on to describe the suffering in Europe amongst the Jews.
"Conditions in Europe," he stated, "are harder for the Jews than ever before. There are thousands without an opportunity to make a living. In one town I found some five thousand people, mostly Jews, who made , a living out of wood. The various processes of cutting and manufacturing and selling were handled by these people. Now they are destitute as this industry is no more. They cannot come back to normal till business relations with Russia are restored. They are in a terrible state out there and are almost at their wits' end.
"Regarding the trouble in the East, I must say that Great Britain rendered the greatest service to mankind by her action there. It is astonishing to see how things are conducted everywhere where the British are concerned.
"The Turks will not punish one of their own who has done harm to Jew or Christian. It believe it is now my business to tell the world what I know about the Turks. The masses were decent people, but once they were incited by the " leaders,^ they took fiendish delight in massacreing."
Mr. Morgenthau then related a "case where American teachers were maltreated by a band of Turks. Extreme measures and torture had to be used before they could make the guilty ones admit their wrong. He expressed the opinion that the Turks should be relegated to Anatolia, for if they had an opportunity, they would advance to Greece and then to Mesopotamia. He insisted that America should co-operate with Great Britain in controlling the activities of the Turks.
Mr. Edmund Scheuer in a very eloquent speech, moved a vote of thanks to the eminent speaker.
Dr. Boris Bogen, representing the Joint Distribution Committee of New York, has left Moscow for the Ukraine to inaugurate the committee's independent relief program among the Ukraine Jews, in accordance with the provisional agreement with the Soviet authorities.
