Mrs. Esther Bercowitz, 2100 Bathurst Street, formerly of Hamilton, Ont, died on Monday, December 10, at the Doctors' Hospital, at the age of seventy-two years. She was the widow of Leon Bercowitz; and is survived by a son, Harry Geller, 28 Strathearn Road; a daughter, Mrs. I. Kates (Zelma), 42 Forden Crescent, Montreal, Que.; six grandchildren: Judy, Michael, and Ruth Geller: Michael Kates and Mrs. Gerald Rubenstein (Marcia), of Pittsburgh, Pa., children of Mr. and Mrs. I. Saul A. Silverman, 1 Benvenuto Place, Toronto, and 356 McNaugh-ton Terrace, Sudbury, Ont., died on Friday, December 14, at the Toronto General Hospital, at the age of sixty-six years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Isabel Silverman; a son, Peter Silverman; a daughter, Miss Judith Silverman; and two sisters: Mrs. H. Theaman (Sylvia), of Scarsdale, N. Y.; and Miss Elaine Silverman, of Toronto, Ont. Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut officiated at funeral services at Holy Blossom Temple. Rabbi Abraham L. Feinberg delivered the eulogy. Interment was at Holy Blossom Memorial Park. Shiva was at the home, 1 Benvenuto Place. Mr. Silverman was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Aaron 'Silverman, pioneer residents of Sudbury, He attended the University of Toronto, and graduated with an honour Bachelor of Arts degree. He received his Master of Arts degree at Cornell University, and a major in business administration. He also studied law. He married Miss Isabel Sommer, of Montreal, Que., in 1932 and they settled in Sudbury where he entered his father's business, supported every business venture for the betterment of Sudbury, and founded the Sudbury Businessmen's Association. He was a member of Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto. He was governor, and member of the executive committee of Laurentian University; honorary Lt.-Col. 58th Light Anti-Air-craft Artillery Regiment, R.C.A.; first chairman of the board of the Sudbury General Hospital; and later an honorary member of the board; member of the board of the Sudbury Memorial Hospital; honorary life member of the Rotary Club; trustee and life member of the Y.M.C.A.; honorary member of the advisory board of the Salvation Army; honorary member of the advisory board of the Boy Scouts; honorary general chairman of Sudbury and district Welfare Federation; honorary member of the Navy League of Canada: and member of Freemasons, Sudbury Lodge. In Toronto, he was a life governor of the New Mount Sinai Hospital; life member of the Royal Ontario Museum; and of the Toronto Art Gallery; and honorary life member of the Mount Sinai Lodge. He was a patron of the National Ballet Guild, Stratford Shakespearean Festival, Dominion Drama Festival, Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Canadian Opera Company, and the Canadian Players Foundation.
