The Herzl Zion Club
Twelve years of unprecedented success! Thus is summarized the history of the Herzl Zion Club. Interwoven closely with 'the success of the organization stands the name of Alex. Snayne, now residing in Montreal, who on
Sunday, February 11, 1911, gathered together a group of young men for the purpose of organizing a club that would actively further the aspirations of Zion.
On that historic day, in the precincts of #ftunromantic attic at 24? Simcoe Street, was conceived what is no\j; the Herzl Zion Club-with - Alex. Shayne as their inspiring genius. Tosc associated with him at the time were Dr. John Shavnc, Mrs. / A. _ Selick, Charles (now l)r.V Markowitz, Harry Karber. William Stone, Horny Vise, Alex. Shafz, Norman Ronim, Jack Lcvine, Kmanuel Gcnesovc and the late Benjamin David Kaufman, financial secretary-during; 1^12-13-14.
IV. Vise served the club as-treasurer for over tour years and upon retiring was presented with a-.handsomely engraved charter in recognition of his faiihfulscrvices. The members recently showed their esteem'for Dr. Marko-witz .by. electing him club physician;

features. Nevertheless, Zionism has remained the predominating feature of the club's activities.
The opening of the Zionist Institute in 1913 was hailed by the club with joy, for in th'e past it had sadly lacked such an institute with, quarters adequate to meet its needs. At this period/the change of name to "Herzl Zion" occurred and was signalized by. an. unparalleled era of progress and prosperity. It participated iri every phase of Zionist and communal work and gradually became known as the most progressive young men's Zionist club in Canada.
Much of the club's progress, has .been due to the wise administration of its various chairmen, who, during the past twelve years were: , Alex. Shayne, Emanuel Genesove, William Stone, Alex. Shatz, Ben LuxenbeVg, Maurice Shulman, Jack Karninker, A. C. Solomon, Robert H. Spren, Harry Weiii-garten, Morns Bossin, J. J. Lyons and Harry Kohen. At the last election Alex. Cr Solomon was again honored with the presidency,. .
The Great War met .with a responsive echo iri the hearts of the members, over 40 enlisting in various units represented in the Allied Expeditionary Forces.
: The Club was instrumental in forming the local Jewish Legion which so distinguished itself later in liberating Palestine. Joseph Taylor was awarded the M.M. and Croix de Guerre, and J. S. Samuels won the D.C.M. and Mons Star, 1914-18. An honor roll of club members now has its proper place in the club-rooms.
In 1919 the entire Toronto Zioni t Council was composed of Herzl members as was also the editorial staff of "The Young Zionist," a local publication representing four clubs during 1916.
