DEATH OF MR. MOSES BILSKY
A shadow has been cast over the Je\vish community by the passing away on Thursday, the 4th inst., of.. Mr. Moses Bilsky in his ninety-fourth year. The first Jewish settler in Ottawa when this city was still called By town ,. he saw the growth and development of a thriving Jewish community, among whom he was held in patriarchal reverence. He inaugurated /the first congregational services, which at first were held in his own house, and at his own expense. A Jew of the old school, he led a .truly Jewish lifet loyal to his religion, loyal to his family and friends as well as t<a his city and country. In his young days he overcame many physical". 'hardships in the course of his romantic career. In 1861 he took a trip to the Cariboo gold-mining country in British Columbia. There was no railway across the country and the journey had to be made -; by rail and water, via New York, the Panama Isthmus, San Francisco and Victoria. The journey took six weeks. Afterwards \yith some companions he made . li is way PJJ horseback to San Francisco via Walla, Walla, Wash., and Portland, Ore. - The Civil War .was" raging in the United States and Mr. Bjlsky joined Uncle Sam's army as trooper. Tie was slightly wounded in the right leg helping .to subdue rioting in San Francisco the day .that Abraham Lincoln was .assassinated in AVashingtcn. He returned . East in 1877 and established the jewelry business in Ottawa which is now being carried on by three of his sons,
His -.funeral on Sunday was attended by practically the entire Jewish popu-Jation of Ottawa as well as a large representation of gentiles in all walks of life, who turned out in spite of the zero weather to pay their last respects to their honoured fellow-citizen. From the house on Daly Avenue, the funeral cortege proceeded to the King Edward Avenue Synagog, passing en route the Rideau Street and Murray Street Synagogs, where the doors were opened to pay respect to the deceased. As a special mark of honour the remains were taken into the synagog, this being the first occasion on which this has ever happened in Ottawa. Dr. Abramo-witz, of Shaar Hashomayrm . Synagog, Montreal, who, with Rabbi Mirsky, officiated, paid a beautiful tribute to .the late Mr. Bilsky, describing him "as a type of the older generation to which the present clay owed so much of true virtue. "In him death .has taken away the oldest member of the Jewish community," he said; "in , fact death has removed a landmark in Canadian Jewry. He grew up with the commonity and gave of his strength to its upbuilding. not the least of his contributions to his count ry being the family which . fac brought up and taught .to be toyal. to their faith and to their countr>T- "e was the head of one of the most respected families in the community, and his death has now caused the first break in this [airily circle, which was bound
