Central Division Zionists Hear Sir Alfred Mond
"Sir Alfred Moad is often called a Balfouriaa Zionist, that is, a Zionist who came into being after the Balfouj Declaration, but thtt is not a fact. He Was a Zionist long before and to-day he is one of the greatest Zionists of the movement/' said Rabbi Brickner in introducing: the distinguished British parliamentarian, Sir Alfred Mond, who delivered an address before three hundred members of the central division of the Zionist Organization Wednesday last at the King Edward Hotel.
"Interested as I am in Empire-building," begin Sir Alfred, "I am even more passionately interested in Palestine-building;" He told of the doubts which he had heard expressed on all sides concerning the project for the rebuilding of Palestine,; adding that people called it a dream and a chimera. ' 'This dream is coming true in a way which perhaps you don't realize," he said.
"There is no use being ashamed of being a Jew," he continued. "It is either a misfortune or a great thing to. belong ;td the finest racethe race which has given to the world the "finest two literatures that have been producedthe Old and New Testaments. By trying to disguise the fact that you are a Jew, you incur the condemnation of right-thinking men the world over. Lloyd George is not afraid to be a Welshman. He goes down to Wales and speaks to his people."
Sir Alfred described very clearly his impressions of the land of Palestine, which he received in the. course of a tour of investigation. "The sensation of standing on that soil beneath the crystal blue sky of Judaea is a sensation worth living on^'s whole life for. Palestine is a little' jewel box, so beautiful a country is it." Naming over an umber of the historical spots he had visited, "Every stone and hill is part of our history. No Jew can fail to feel it who visits Palestine," he said..
In the time of Josephu's, Sir Alfred said, the population :Of Judaea alone had . been between three and four millions. At present the 'whole of Palestine Was populated by but 700,000 inhabitants; There was not the slightest doubt but that the land was capable of supporting a vast number more than it has been doing/and for this reason the re-establishment plan might rightly be looked upon, as a good investment. "It does not matter what: you are, German, Russian, Polish, Italian or English, as long as you believe in the upbuilding of Palestine," he continued.
His career in business had fitted him, said the speaker, to judge between good and bad propositions. "If the proposition were in any sense of the word a fraud, I myself would never have lifted my hand to aid it," he said. "It is as good a country m which a man may build up a future and rear a family as , any I have seen," he continued. "It is a;white man's country, with a climate like that of Southern Italy; it is an agricultural country, suited to the cultivation of almost numberless pro^ ducts, for which there are ready and profitable markets. Not only can.you grow these productsoranges, grape fruit, grapes, barley, tobacco and cotton, but find ready market."
With regard to the Jews who have alieady migrated to Palestine, he said: "In one generation our people have reassigned the manhood \\ hich has been almost crushed out of them by centuries of persecution in the ghettos of Europe. After seeing these men and women I feel more strongly than ever the pride of being a Jew."
"The national home in Palestine win be jttst whsit the Jews iratke it. (Loud applause). Moreover, you cannot build homes on paper or sentiment/1 he said, "it takes hearts and arms. Palestine does not belong to the Zionists nor does it belong to the Roman Jews. Palestine betoogs to fife Jews of the world. I do not beKeve in spoon-feeding
