DAUGHTERS OF ISRAEL BRIDGE
Daughters of Israel Charitable Society held a bridge and man jongg at Chateau Quinte, Ste. Marguerite, August 2, which realized $63. A raffle, first won by Mrs, jM. Moscovitch, who returned the prize to be re-raffled, was won by Mrs. L. Marcus, who donated $1. The prizes were donated by the Weiss Import Co. and refreshments by Mrs. Kaufman, of Chateau Quinte. The convener was Mrs. M. Gross.
SCHOLARSHIPS WANTED
The scholarship committee of the Dufferin Educational Society acknowledge the following scholarships for the school term 1927-1928: Bronfman Interests and B. Aaron (2); Monash Circle (2); and one each from the following: Peter Bercovitch, K.C., H. Simon & jSons, Ltd., J. L. Sabbath, Joseph Cbnen, K.C. The committee will canvas for further scholarships. The value of the scholarship is $25 for the first year, $30 for the second year, $35 for the third year, and $40 for the final. Scholarship applications, together with school certificates and a letter of recommendation from a Hebrew teacher, to the Society's Secretary, Miss Sarah Miller, Apt. 10, 5069 Sherbrooke Street West, Montreal, will be considered.
EXPORT TRADE IN PALESTINE
The Palestine Government has been endeavouring to stimulate the export of table grapes from the country. A trial consignment of about twelve tons of early ripening grapes suitable for an overseas market to England at the expense of the Government and colonists have been requested to send specimens of their grapes for that purpose. The Empire Marketing Board in London undertook to receive the consignment and to arrange for its examination and disposal.
From October, 1926, to March, 1927, 2,163,129 cases of oranges were exported from Palestine to England, Egypt and other countries, as compared with 1,117,434 cases during the same period of last year. The value of this year's export exceeds that of last year by more than a million and a half dollars. Of the total export, more than seventy-five per cent, was sent to England.
Packed in 1,500 cases and weighing seventy-five tons, 430,000 Palestinian pounds' worth of coin in silver, nickel and bronze have arrived in Jerusalem, under strong military escort. This is the first instalment of the new currency which is expected next Fall to supersede the Egyptian currency now used. The Palestinian pound is equivalent in value to the pound sterling, but is divided decimally into one thousand "mills."

the establishment of the synagogue. It is planned that the edifice will also house an Institute of Jewish Studies. According to the plan, the building is to be completed in 1928. The library now owns 40,000 volumes of Judaica.
In Germany encouragement has been given to the Jewish back to the land movement in literature issued by the Union of Jewish ex-soldiers. In a pamphlet issued by the Union, the idea of settling young Jews on the land is advocated as an antidote of anti-Semitism. The movement is supported by Professor Franz Oppenheimer, Dr. Timendorfer, former president of the I.O.B.B. lodge in Berlin, and by Rudolf Mosse.
American Jewish Congress is to be represented by a delegation made up of members of its Executive Committee and the heads of affiliated national and central organizations, the Hon. Julian W. Mack being the chairman of the delegation.
Eugene Bagger, journalist of international affiliations and author of "Eminent Europeans," has a new book (Putnam) entitled "Francis Joseph, Emperor of Austria." Writing of Francis-Joseph, not as a symbol nor a political abstraction, but as a human being, Mr. Badger has reconstructed a remarkably vivid study of the man and an entertaining picture of the period in which he lived.
All arrangements have been completed by the Committee of Jewish Delegations in Paris for the holding of the Conference on Jewish Rights, which is to take place in Jurich, beginning August 17. The
Sigmund Freud, foremost authority on psychology, has a new work of distinction, called "Hemmung, Symptom und Angst." It will soon appear in English.
