RUMANIAN JEWS MOURN DEATH OF KING FERDINAND
Statements expressive of the sorrow felt by the Jews of Rumania at the death of King Ferdinand were made public last week. Dr. William Filder-man, the President of the Union of Rumanian Jews, referred to the kindly sentiments of the late King to the Jewish population and his desire to have equality for all citizens of the country established in the land. Rabbi Niemirower, who has been until now the only Jewish senator, spoke in a similar strain, associating the memory of the King with the emancipation of the Jews of Rumania. Both spoke in behalf of the entire Jewish population, when they expressed their sorrow at the death of the King and their fidelity and loyalty to the new King Michael I.
The Je,ws of Rumania were deeply impressed'with the announcement that included in the will of King Ferdinand there was a bequest made to Jewish schools. The Jewish Community of Bucharest, Ln a manifesto issued on the occasion of the King's death, speaks of him as the first one to recognize and appreciate the sacrifice made by Jews on the battlefield and of his sympathy with the struggle _of the Jews to obtain equal rights in Rumania. Dowager Queen Marie and Prime Minister Bratiano received messages of condolences from the Rumanian Zionist organization. The sum of $5,000 will be raised by the Zionists to have the name of the late King inscribed in the Golden Book of the Jewish National Fund.
The recent parliamentary elections, resulting in such a signal victory for the Government party, brought much hope and courage to the Jews. Dr. Filderman declared that "there wiU be no more student disturbances at the universities." "The Minister (Bratiano) will no longer tolerate any disorders at the universities. The policy of incitement and enmity which previously used to come from the very quarters from which should come love for one's neighbour, is at an end." In an interview which Dr. Filderman had with M. Bratiano, the latter said: "Till now we have been loyal opponents. I hope that from now on we shall be loyal collaborators."
Both Mr. Lucien Wolf and Dr. M. Gaster expressed their complete satisfaction with the turn of events in Rumania at a meeting of the Anglo-Jewish Association, held before the death of the King. Dr. Gaster said that he had reason to hope that things would be entirely different in the position of the Jews of Rumania under the new administration.
Rumor has it that a noted Jewish lawyer of Bucharest, Mr. Rosenthal, will be appointed Rumanian ambassador to Great Britain. The post has become vacant due to the acceptance by M. Titulescu, at present ambassador to England, of the portfolio of Minister of Education in the new cabinet.
SOLOMON J. SOLOMON, BRITISH ARTIST, DIES
Solomon J. Solomon, member of the Royal Academy and the painter who initiated the use of camouflage in the British army during the war, died in London, July 27, of heart disease at the age of 66.
By studying an aerial photograph of a village which had been occupied by the Germans, Solomon discovered the art of camouflage already in use by the enemy. The fact that some of the houses in the photograph cast sha-

dowi and others did not gave him the clue to the device.
Deceased was bora in London an$l waa educated at the school of Thomas Whitford and by private tutors. He studied art at Heatherfy'a, the Royal Academy School, Munich Academy and the Beaux Arts in Paris, In addition he had done independent work in Italy, Spain and Morocco. He was a Royal Academician and had been President of the Royal Society of British Artists.
During the war he served as a lieutenant-colonel in the Royal Engineers.
Among the most noted of his paintings are: "Cassandra," "Samson/1 "Niobe," "The Judgment of Paris," and the decorations of the Royal Exchange and House of Parliament.
He spent eleven years painting the Coronation Luncheon at the Guildhall. This was a work undertaken after the death of John Bacon, who had originally been commissioned to do the work, Bacon had not yet had sittings for the immense canvas but had merely lined in the figures. The outbreak of the war made it especially difficult to find time for sittings of the important persons portrayed in the work and it was this which took so much time. Solomon estimated that the actual time spent on the canvas was eighteen months.
BERLIN JEWRY WELCOMES BNAI BRITH PRESIDENT
The Berlin Lodge of the I. 0.,B. B. gave President Alfred M. Cohen an enthusiastic reception during his visit to the capital of the German Republic during the week of July 20. The largest and most inspiring meeting ever held by-the Berlin Lodge greeted Mr. Cohen, who during his stay in the city visited all of the institutions maintained .or subsidized by the German Bnai Brith. These included a home for the aged and a home for mothers and infants maintained by the women's auxiliary of Berlin Lodge. He visited also the orphanage at Pankow, the High School of the Science of Judaism, and the leading synagogues.
The audience granted to President Cohen by Chancellor Marx, already reported by cable, was, according to the Judische Rundschan, no perfunctory affair. The Chancellor of the Republic held a long, confidential conference with the president of the I. 0. B. B., who was accompanied by the president of the Bnai Brith District of Germany, Rev. Dr. Baeck.
But, while President Cohen was welcomed by the Government as well as the Jewry of Germany, his visit caused the professional anti-Semites to see red. Especially rabid in his attacks on Mr. Cohen was the notorious Dr. Gobel, who since his expulsion from Vienna, has allied himself with the "Hacken Krenzler" (Swastika Group) headed by Adolph Hutler, of "Putsch" fame.
Gobel, who is editing an anti-Semitic organ called Angriff (Attack), published by the "Hacken Krenzler," sees in Mr. Cohen's visit to Germany, a development of the "international conspiracy"the same conspiracy which for so long a time, and until he realized it was only a scare-crow, Henry Ford so valiantly combatted.
"The visits to Germany of Alfred M. Cohen, Dr. Weizman, head of the Zionist organization, and Jacob Fish-man, editor of the Jewish Morning Journal, coming so close together were not mere accidents," declared Gobel. "These so-called pleasure-tours have very definite purposes." But what these purposes are Gobel fails to reveal. Absurd as Gobel's statements obviously are, they have been reprinted in various reactionary organs.
Dr. Julius Drachaler, of New York, well known as a social worker and educator, died last week at the aye of 37. He was director of the Bureau of Jewish Social Research and on . the faculty of Smith College. Profeasoj DrachsJer was also *nttw of a aumber of authoritative books in his special
