THE MONTREAL BNAI BRITH LODGE
We rejoice that the Independent Order of Bnai Brith of Montreal is about to inaugurate a course in Jewish studies for the members, to be conducted by the local English-speaking rabbis. Certainly the I.O.B.B. can be of tremendous service in every community. H is the only Jewish organization of men which is non-partisan. It is one organization which attempts to give expression to all that is best in Judaism without harping on "Jewish sectarianism."
We trust that the members of the local lodge will avail themselves of the opportunity and attend the study groups. Knowledge of Judaism will bring self-respect into the heart of the Jew. And this is certainly needed in Jewish life to-day! May the Montreal Bnai Brith help bring to its individual members a clearer conception of the culture, ideals and traditions of the Jews, thereby increasing their interest in all things Jewish.

A LETTER FROM RABBI BERGER
Rabbi Harry J. Stern, January 8th, 1928
Temple Emanu-El,
Montreal.
DEAR RABBI STERN:
In last week's REVIEW you accused the Canadian rabbinate of "being so busy with marrying and burying as not to have time for cultural activities." If your attention is called to the fact that a rabbi is vitally interested in the Jewish student body at McGill, you would perhaps say, "Well, exceptions prove the rule." Be it as it may, permit me to call your attention to the work and needs of the Semitic department at McGill.
In that department, no less than seventeen courses are offered, all dealing with the historical and cultural values of Hebraism. Last year the Jewish graduates of McGill pledged themselves to provide five thousand dollars annually to enable the department to carry on its present work. Only one-half of it was realized with considerable effort in 1927. Nothing has been done for this year.
It is not necessary for me to enter into details of the difficulties the professors and lecturers meet because of the lack of funds. Possibly, I should say, because of the lack of interest. I should indeed welcome a helping hand extended by you so that the aims of the Semitic department of McGill be carried out uninterruptedly.
Faithfully yours, I am,
J. BERGER.
We thank our colleague and friend for his letter and we are more than happy to bring to the attention of Montreal Jewry the rabbi's efforts in behalf of the Semitic department at McGill University. He certainly knows the situation, being one of the instructors. It seems to us that the Jewish community ought not to ignore its possible duties toward McGill in general and the Semitic department in particular.
If the Jewish graduates (according to the above letter) promised to contribute annually, such a promise must be held sacred. We are anxious to meet with the graduates to discuss the very important matter. Jewish dignity requires such a gathering.
