But Weizmann was prepared for big worka brilliant student, a distinguished chemist, a man trained to logical thought and yet a poet and a dreamer. Weirrnann is well qualified for Jewish leadership. Too many Zionist orators are rhapsodiste, fanatics and chauvinists and their words generally are so much bombast and rhetoric. They appeal to hysteria and passion, not, to reason and logic. When Weizmann speaks, he speaks facts. You feel the difficulties that confront the movement. He does not sugar-coat them, nor ignore them. In concise and lurid words he paints the realities of Jewish Palestine. You feel that a long struggle confronts the Jew there. He speaks like a practical statesman.
s But his message is not one of pessimism. The difficulties he depicts can be overcomeare being overcome, and at present" they constitute a challenge to world Jewry. Civilizations are neither created nor recreated in a day or in a decade. The Zionist movement has made mistakes in the past and will make more in the future, but it learns from its experiences.
In all of ~Weizmann's addresses, the vision of the mystic and dreamer appears. He not only speaks of villages, of sanitation, of education, of immigration, but he can lift himself above the immediate and practical., lie can see a spiritual goal, and can envisage as he did at the Canadian Club "a new message of peace coming to the world from the hills of Judaea and Nazareth." Thus he appeals to the intellect and to the soul. Tofonto was stirred by his visit. He made many friends for the cause he serves so unselfishly. World Jewry is fortunate in having such able and big-visioned leadership.
