Dr. Ira M. Freeman, twenty-two, research worker at the University of Chicago, told a gathering of 150 physicists from all parts of the country at the university that, after two years of study, he had discovered argon in the sun's corona. Argon is a rare gas. It constitutes one per cent, of the earth's atmosphere. It is used commercially ia the manufacture of certain kinds of incandescent lights. The discovery is called remarkable in view of the fact that during the entire age of science the total time in which total eclipses of the sun have been visible scientifically amounts to but one hour, a total eclipse lasting but a few moments. Freeman, under the direction of Prof. H. B. Lemon, professor of physics at the University of Chicago, gathered all the scientific data' obtainable of the subject and spent almost two years in its study. The Institute of International Education has just presented Dr. Freeman with a Fellowship to the University of Frankfort, Germany, where he will study during the coming year, and conduct research in mathematical physics.
