tare and helping Mother to prepare the festive dinner, How olesn the house had looked. She seemed to smell the varnish and the newly polished floors, And how the Jewish strangers in the Gentile town had appreciated Dr, Lewis' invitation to dinner. The menthey were for the most part ealesmen of the garrulous type would tell how their parents had observed the holidays. Into their eyes would come a soft, distant, dreamy expression. Gentile neighbors passing the house would stop in to say, "Happy New Year, Dr. Lewis. Happy New Year." Life had been ao merry before that terrible accident in which both Dr. Lewis and his wife were killed.
Eleanore shuddered.
She remembered now how well her parents, who were not Orthodox, had maintained their identity in a Gentile town. And, irrelevantly, she remembered, too, how important she had felt at staying home on Rosh Hashonah when the other children were at school.
This would be the first year she was not home for New Year. She was tempted not to go to work Thursday. Would Mr. Gardner suspect the reason ? The best way to "throw him off the track" was to be absent on Wednesday too. She was not becoming dogmatic, she assured herself, but she would observe the day in memory of her parents.
On Wednesday the landlady telephoned, at Eleanore's request, to report that she was ill. Eleanore herself spent the day reading, but somehow Mr. Gardner's dark face protruded itself between her and the page and his deep voice rang in her ears. Eleanore shook her head as if to brush away
thl*.p. How long th. . seemed and how foolish h0 had become. Why wouldn't she mills that Harold Gardner was an ideal and Ralph, who loved her, was reality.
Wednesday evening found her st Ralph's home. The lighted candle, the many dishes and the glistening silverware on the crisp, white tablecloth gave the room a holiday appearance. Mrs. Josephson, in a new black satin dress, took Eleanore in her arms and kissed her, whn< Mr. Jossphson ordered his wife to relinquish her hold and give him a chance, if their only son.whom they had indulged in everything, want-od to marry this pretty, vivacious girl, they would do their best to further his suit.
The dinner was lovely. Everyone laughed and joked. During the evening other guests arrived and were welcomed by Mrs. Josephson with a loud kiss and a "Happy New Year." Once when the bell rang, she shouted the greeting and implanted the kiss before she could distinguish the figure in the dark hall. There stood the colored janitor, who wanted to know about a window shade. The guests laughed uncontrollably.
Eleanore felt warm and happy. This reminded her of the New Years at home. It was pleasant to think that in all parts of the world people were feeling just as content andJewish. Feeling Jewish, that explained the sense of security that enveloped her. Now she realized how lonely she would have felt had not the Josephsons invited her to their home.
She' loved Mr. and Mrs. Josephson. Could she, she wondered, learn to love Ralph too. Her thoughts were interrupted by his boyish voice,
