Massacre at Spires, 1096. A mixed horde* under Count Emico of Leiningen was making its way up-the Rhine Valley to join the forces led by Peter the Hermit in the First Crusade. This made itself notorious by a series of attacks upon the Jews which outdid any similar outrages that had previously taken place in Europe. 'It was the third Sabbath after the Passover when they arrivvd at Spires and surrounded the Synagogue, with the intention of putting the worshippers to the sword. Those inside, however, defended themselves manfully and repelled the attack. After-w.lrtfs, they paid dearly for their temerity, as the, mob threw them-Nt-l.ves upon them individually and slew ten of them. One pious Jewess killed herself in order to escape from their hands. The vigorous measures" taken by the Bishop saved the survivors from further molestation. Nevertheless, the example spread rapidly to the other communities of the Rhine-land, where a series of terrible massacres now began to rage. Hitherto, whatever outrages may have taken place against the Jews in Europe were merely sporadic. Henceforth, however, they became more and more general, so that they have hardly known- any respite down to our own days. The massacre at Worms of May 3rd., 1096, may be reckoned as the starting-point of the'history of Jewish martyrdom.

Burning of Antonio Homtny 1624. A member of a very wealthy Marrano family in Portugal, he had embraced for security a clerical career. In this he made rapid progress, so that he was ultimately! appointed Professor of Canon Law ^n the University of Coimbrau He aroused the suspicions of the Inquisition, and had to appear before, hs tribunal in 1611: but his reputation as the author^o!~Ttrtain theological works of indubitable orthodoxy sufficed to procure his release. Nevertheless a close watch was thereafter kept upon him. In consetjuence, it was discovered that a secret synagogue existed in Lisbon, in which this sapient Christian theologian actually conducted the service, and even preached J A fulj,-account of the proceedings in this secret conventicle on the Day of Atonement of 1619 was elicited from some-of those who attended, and has error tlmra to MS. Auto <U fe at Palma (Majorca}, 1691. The terrorism which had raged there precisely-three hundred years earlier had driven the majority of the Jewish inhabitants (henceforth to be known as chuftts} to die baptismal font. The Inquisition, after a first sporadic burst of activity, paid httle attention to then for a period of ncarry 2 century and a half. la consequence, they became so bold tiiat they conducted public worship almost without concealment ac-
