UTILITARIANISM
Two Jews, one from a small village In Poland, and the other from London, were discussing the merits of their respective native places.
"How many Jews are there In your village?" asked the Londoner.
"One hundred."
"And how many goyim?"
"About 20."
"How do the 20 make a living among so many Jews?**
"Easily. They carry parcels, make fires on Shabbus, and make themselves useful in many different ways."
Then the Polish Jew asked: "And how many Jews are there In London?" "About 160,000."
"And are there any goyim, too?"
"Of courae," the other laugMed, "nearly 7,000,000 of them."
"My, oh my!" exclaimed the naive Polish Jew. "Why do yon need so many goyim for only 1M.0M Jews?"

TRAVEL NOW A REAL PLEASURE
Paris City of Light
There used to be a saying, to the effect that good Americans went to Paris before they died. True or not, there is no doubt that Paris"La Ville Lumlere"still exerts a mighty fascination over visitors from these shores. Possibly our American friends find that the absence of any XVIIIth Amendment is an attractive feature of life in the French Capital; but Canadians, who are not worried by sumptuary laws, also find in Paris one of the most interesting cities of their European itineraries.
For the ladies, Paris is much more than the capital city of France. For them, it. is the fashion centre of the world; and the creations of the Paris couturiers set the style for Bond St., Fifth Avenue, and Sherbrooke St. Peculiarly enough, it is London that sets the fashion in men's attire, which suggests reflection on the relative positions of men and women in the two cities.
There is a wide difference between Paris "and the towns of provincial Francea difference not of size only, but of spirit and essence. The provinces are the real France: the France' that resisted the German onslaughts at Verdun and the Chemin des Dames: the France that paid Two Billion Dollars indemnity in gold within two years of the Franco-Prussian war, which amount had been thought by Bismarck himself to be sufficient to cripple France for years to come. But the bourgeois and the peasant, the shop-keeper and the notary, dug. deep into the old stocking under the hearth-stone or in the mattress, and an astounded world saw the newly-born German Empire paid _ln_full_wlthin two years.
We are not suggesting that all this was done without the aid of Paris: that would be most untrue. But what we do mean is that Paris is not France in the sense that London is England. A peculiar thing is that the Provincial who comes to Paris rapidly becomes "plus Parigot que les Parisians" to quote their own expression.
The history of Paris stretches back at least to the time when Caesar wrote, "Omnia Gallia, in partes tree,
rilvisa est." It was then known as Lutetia, and occupied the present He de hi Cite. Some of the later Roman Emperors resided there from time to time: and Julian the Apostate was especially fond of his "dear Luletia." After the fall of the Roman power, the history of Paris is the history of the Kings Qf the
