BNAI BRITH HEARS TORONTO RABBI
Centuries of changing contacts have not availed to efface individual characteristics of the Je\v. Kven though sortie may deny the pull of thousands of yearn of spiritual crea-tiveness which forms the background of Jewish life and 'outwardly break away, they cannot lie to their own souls. This triumph and tragedy, weakness and strength of the Jew formed the ba.sis of an address, "Out of the I'a.st." by Rabbi Samuel Sachs, of Congregation Goel Tzedek, Toronto, before members of the Bnai Urith Lodge 'Xu. 729 in the Mount Royal Hotel Thursday night, February 12. .
Rabbi Sachs gave reasons for the rejection of the Jews by the world at large. Assimilation, he pointed out, was suicidal, and no solution of the problem, for it was not rational for any individual to respect those who had no respect for themselves. It is this attempt indeed that is one of the basic reasons for the great dislike with which the majority of the Jews are viewed, he said.
Just as the Germans are noted for their stolidarity of purpose, the French for their romanticism, and the Hellenic nationalities for their artistic aptitude, so must the Jew be looked upon in the light of the prophet,-the psalmist and the long line

<t" teachers' who' kept away from the turmoil of the market place. Rabbi Sachs said, disproving by numerous references that the'Jew.is a materialist rather than an idealist.
Although, today it appears that the Jew despises the Idealistic qualities, it is not a Jewish characteristic. Rabbi Sachs contended. "\Ve are only aping others when we boast of.mu-t""ial. successes, and our very actions prove that the garment fits none ton well. Why. then, are we so boastful in parading these triumphs? Men to the manner horn are not so self-< onscious." The solution then for partial elimination of the current inherent dislike of the Jews by most nationalities, he believed, was the throwing off of the artificiality that so ill becomes them.
"Lot us live our own lives in the-spirit of the great past, for by so doing we do not havo- to put ourselves against the spirit of the age. We reject our own heritage and sell it for a mess of pottage, which is an vin-natural proceeding.

souls, and
neither time nor place can blur their individuality for a man cannot leave his Jewishness even by forsaking his relicion.
If the Jew. then was to be rejected both for his JewlshneHs and for his backsliding, Rabbi Sachs said, it was best for him to retain his distinct characteristics with the admiration that must ensue for his steadfastness of purpose Instead of being despised for his" delinquencies.
In closing, the speaker admonished the Bnai Brith 'members to live up to the three names which their organization .stood -ferr^iz., Hebrew, Israelite and JewT~~~Hebrew stands for courage of conviction, Israelite represents the fighter who fought nobly throughout the centuries for all that he held most dear, and Jew reminds us that we are connected with the kingdom of Judaea. Wherever we may be, we are still Jews and indissolUbly bound up with our homeland. Its rehabilitation is our task, and .we must not sever our connection with it, for It is the hope of the Jews of the future."
