NEW YORK JEWRY IS BROKE!
her eight hundred were present at the farewell dinner in honor >f. Einstein held in New York last week. This testimonial dinner ranged in order to inaugurate the American Palestine Campaign. iit from the radio broadcast and the newspaper reports, the speeches ,<tein, Wise and Warburg were splendid and inspiring. It was >llv good to hear Einstein say "auf wiedersehen." WotrW-that iv:it scientist might return to us soon. But what a disappointing n2 that was when one considers that only two hundred thousand > was given on that occasion for Eretz Yisroel. Certainly to have nstein address a gathering of nearly a thousand people and to ob-uch a niggardly sum for Palestine, indicates that something is radi-r wrong with the New York Jewish community! Had the eminent ^.-rist permitted himself to have made a broadcast in HollywoodI mv-'uv the movie magnates would have paid more than two hundred iiv ivind for it! The honor and privilege of having had Einstein to in^ i rate the Palestine Campaign should have brought a much larger sum tor Palestine. But perhaps New York Jewry is really broke ...
PROPHET OF ISRAEL
A Christian friend and an admirer of Judah L. Magnes draws my .itt-ntion to a recent article in "The World Tomorrow" dealing with thf fascinating life-story of the Dean of the Hebrew University of Palestine. The writer claims that Magnes has ever been the fearless prophet, tin'- -champion of human rights and that he is to-day one of the greatest >t Jew*: "A recent visitor to the Near East who has always regarded Mines' views on social questions, on national and international problems, on war and treaties as dangerous and unsound to say the least, reported aiion. his return to this country that Palestine has already produced two jivat [ews Pinchas Ruttenberg, the engineer, and Judah L. Magnes, ot the Hebrew University. He added that if Palestine possessed twenty mich men, neither England nor the Arabs could prevent Israel from n-lli/ing its aspirations in the land of its fathers."
IS BRITISH JUDAISM DEAD?
in'the West London Synagogue Magazine for March we find the fallowing candid judgment pronounced by an American Jew concerning English Judaism:
You ask me what opinion I have formed of British Jewry from my .nous visits to your countr)'.
i speak not as a jingoist. I have never been accused of being an Americophile, yet you must admit that the future of Jewry rests with this mtry. England is at best going through her travail of a late parturi-*'\n as far as Judaism is concerned. All the glamour of English Judaism A-th its long line of tradition and distinguished service could never com-.vn-ate for its inherent weakness. It is decrepit and ready to collapse. t""is is not your fault and certainly not mine. It is a fact regrettable to mpartial observers. Even the liberal movement has had such a late v 1, in comparison with American Judaism, as to reduce its efficacy al-:iiutto nil in the light of the tremendous upheavals in the religious thought :he last few decades. American Judaism is far indeed from being in n >rime. It has already grown hoary and wizened, and like all old peo-it babbles away in its shrill, tremulous voice. But English Judaism is (i. It is Iving in state, and we are paying a last tribute to its beautifully ;aied corpse. An American Jew
A JEWISH YOUTH SABBATH
At Temple Emanu-El last Friday Eve the young people were in rje of the entire service. The ritual was read bv a vouth, and in .v of the regular sermon, two-young men, college graduates, presented vmposium on ''Whither Youth:" And judging from the frank re->us utterances of these vouths. the large attendance and the entire ^rational and spiritual atmosphere which prevailed such an inno-r.irn as "Youth Sabbath" is worth while. It certainly gives the young r>le an i>ppintunitv to speak for themselves and offers them direct par-nation in congregational life. We recommend that "A Jewish Youth v ^hath" become an annual practice and part of even- congregational endar.
