MONTREAL FEDERATION ELECTS OFFICERS
At the annual meeting of the Montreal Federation of Jewish Philanthropies Sunday in Baron de Hirsch Institute, the following officers were elected: Mark Workman, Maxwell Goldstein, K.C., Michael Hirsch, Ly-on. Cohen, Al Lesser, honorary presidents. Samuel Bronfman, A. Z. Cohen, Jos. Cohen. K.C., MJ^A., N. Desk in, C. B. Fainer, Leon H. Pis-chel, Samuel Hart, A. H. Jassrby, Allan Bronfman, David Kitsch, Dr. Simon Kirsch, Felix Leopold, J. Le- �-vinson, Sr., H. M. Ripstein, Louis , Salomon, Joel B. Saxe, Martin Sir mon, M. M. Sperber, K.C., are on the board of trustees. '

Special -funds available from the federal, provincial and municipal authorities, Allan .Bronfman pointed out,' enable Federation to carry on to advantage up to the present time. These monies, however, were all used up, and he stressed the necessity of collecting: outstanding subscriptions. In passing, he mentioned that a special June collection campaign would be Instituted to meet the exigencies of the moment.
Mr. Bronfman paid tribute to the efforts of Jos. Cohen, K.C., M.L.A.. and Peter Bercovitch, K.C., MJLuA., in encouraging the Government to increase its grant from $5,000 to $15,000. Aid. Max Seigler, was praised for his work in Inducing the city of Montreal to increase its contributions, as well as the waiving of water taxes On many persons listed on the family welfare books. ,
Ernest G. F. Vaz, executive director, was instrumental in initiating representations to the federal Government from the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies and the Montreal Council of Social Agencies for an exemption from income tax collections to charity within 10 per cent of the contributor's home, Mr. Bronfman added, in announcing the official appointment of Mr. Vaz as executive director from that of director.
Referring to the successful campaign for $300,000 instituted by Federation, J. P. Levee, chairman of the business men's council, stated that the assistance of the various individuals and organisations helping in the drive were deserving of mention and praise.
In connection with the work of the Baron de Hirsch Institute during the past year, M. M. Sperber, K.C. president, called attention to the necessity of a Jewish Home for Incurables. MWhitet a few weeks ago the city administration paooert a resolution ceding the ground for such an institution, nevertheless, owing to the protests the residents of the ward wtoar* it was proposed to build the Institution, tbe city coancQ cancelled tiw resovwOoVfc. ^flis eKy essjneu is on record that it wffl provide a suit-
site for such an Institution, and it is for those interested In the matter to get together with the civic authorities and to choose a fit and proper location for a building to meet the requirements of our Jewish in curables," he declared.
Malca H. Friedman, supervisor of the family welfare department, said: "Among the 802 families with whom the department had contact in 1930, there were 1,080 children under the age of 14 years and 512 children, mostly adolescents.
The Mount Sinai Sanatorium stands as an august monument to the communal and philanthropic endeavors of Montreal Jewry, Louis Salomon, president, stated in his report at the annual meeting.
The assets of the Federation stand at $118,686.34, according to the fourteenth annual report.
Expenditure during the year .amounted to 4142,756.62, apart from the $1.002.02 subsidy to the Mackay Institute for Deaf Mutes. Administration cost $315,121.10; income was $57.876.73; subscriptions amounted to $155,953.25: donations totalled $81,-660.38. and sundry income from discounts and interest was $315,121.10. In the course of his presidential report, J; Levinson says:
"Our community deserves the highest commendation for the generous spirit manifested by all classes In response to the urgent appeal to save Federation. In times of distress, human sympathy &Eema__tQ_rei�rn supreme in the heart of man. In spite of adverse business conditions, Montreal citizens have been very liberal to their charities in general. The va- " rious drives, which took place during the latter part of 1930 resulted in reaching their set objectives. It was gratifying to observe the spirit of co-operation in evidence on all sides. Neither class nor creed was considered in the urgent appeals to alleviate human want.
"On behalf of the Jewish community, I wish to take the opportunity of expressing grateful appreciation to our Gentile friends for the mural and material support so generously extended during our strenuous efforts to reach the goal we set out for.
"I particularly desire to mention the kindness and consideration of Mr. E. W. Beatty, K.C., president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, who rendered first aid at the campaign opening banquet. His own generosity and that of his company proved an inspiration to many others. His wholehearted utterance* that evening nerved as a powerful impetus to our workers, and greatly stimulated our determination to achieve success.
