At the same time there was the refugee problem, Itself a tragic by-product of the working* of Hltlertsrri. The Refugee Committee, it is to be noted, settled and established over a thousand of these victim* of racial and political persecution in various part* of Canada in such manner that they were able to build their lives anew, and without disrupting the country'* economic organization, find their places in the land of their sanctuary. '
With the outbreak of war, however, the necessity of raising funds for Overseas needs of many descriptions assumed colossal proportions. Almost all European Jews were soon to become refugees, actual or potential. To come to their aid was not a problem which could be coped with by isolated organisation* working in segregative ways. Accordingly. under the inspiration/ of the Canadian Jewish Congress, there came into being as an arm of Congress. the United Jewish Refugee and War Relief Agencies, and with it was associated the ORT-- engaged in splendid rehabilitation work, the Joint Jewish Distribution Committee, with its ubiquitous machinery and long tradition of relief , the Polish Verbond, making the stricken inimon of Pol-ish Jewry its special concern, and the People'* Relief, a mass effort to meet a mass calamity the whole a veritable cross section of Canadian Jewry banded together to answer the exigencies of the time.
