"Truant officer 1"
The word seat the shivers down Heckle's back. She had refused to .go to school ever since that day, almost a month ago, when she decided she was old enough to work, even though she was just fifteen. "Nothing her father and mother could say would move her. Even when they threatened that the truant officer would come, she refused to go back to school.
It was the Board of Education Attendance Department that asked the Jewish Family Welfare Bureau to investigate the reason for Beckie's absence from school. And so, Instead of the authoritative official that Beckie expected, her visitor turned out to be a case worker with a friendly smile and an understanding attitude.
Beckie was belligerent at first. She didn't want to go to school, see? She was big for her age. She wanted to work and earn money for clothes. Sure her parents wanted her to go to school, but there just wasn't enough money for all the things she wanted. She talked on about herself, gradually unfolding her fifteen-year-old wish to be grown up and emancipated from her parents. When the case worker accepted this, Beckie went on to talk about school, and her vegrets at leaving,
Beckie's parents told the case worker they wanted her to Complete her commercial course, which would take another year. From school she learned that Beckie had been a good student and in the Principal's opinion should be encouraged to continue.
Armed with this information the case worker had another long talk with Beckie, in which she helped her to decide that she really did want to go back to school, and that she was only postponing for a short time her wish to be grown up and independent The time would come soon
