Zionist Leader Denounces Palestine Trials
The Palestinian gun - running trials were denounced as "part and parcel of a systematic effort by the Palestine Government to discredit Jewish aspirations in Palestine by Indirection and conniving." in an address by Louis Lipsky of New York, a member of the World Zionist Executive. Mr. Lipsky spoke before Zionist District No. 7 in the Bnai Jeshurun Centre,. New York.
"Gun-running in a war zone is an every-day occurrence," he said. "Arabs have engaged in it in Pake-tine since long before the war and their intentions were hostile to democracy and the United Nations. But the Palestine administration has seen fit to convert a routine trial involving two Jews into a cause celebre.
"Reporters were especially summoned to Cairo to magnify the incident. The trial was a sounding board for the most vicious anti-Jewish utterances by the prosecuting officials, and these were broadcast around the world."
J.D.C. Permitted To Repay Shanghai Loan
The U.S. Treasury Department has licenced the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee to pay in the US. a note for S136V500 borrowed after Pearl Harbor by its American representatives in Shanghai to supply food, clothing and medicine to many of the 22,000 Jewish lefugeej in that city, it was
executive vice chairsaan of the committee.
The note was brought to the United States early this year and war payable to relatives of the Shanghai resident who made the loan.
The committee's two representatives in Shanghai, Miss Laura Margolls and Manuel Siegel, were trapped there when the war started. Before thai they had been providing relief for 13,000 of 20 000 Jewish refugees in the Chinese seaport. After the Japanese occupation the two were permitted ty a limited extent to continue their relief work among the refugee?, who were destitute and living in shabby tenements on the mud flats of the Whangpoo. River and even in the small Shanghai synagogue.
Mr. Hyman said payment of the note was on the basis of an arrangement made by the committee with its cooperating relief units in territories now occupied by the Axlr. To assure continuance of their welfare work, the committee had advised this group before the start of hostilities that if communications were broken by war they were authorized to borrow funds and commodities locally, to be repaid by the committee when ft was possible to do so without siding the enemy.
