Montreal Life Shows Progress
Report of Montreal Life Insurance Company, submitted at the annual meeting here, indicated continued progress in 1943. Insurance In force increased over eleven per cent to nearly $72*000,000. Assets increased over ten per cent to $11,400,000. Interest earned on investment* was 4.91 per cent.
In addressing the meeting Arthur P. Earle, president of the company, pointed out that <the Canadian life insurance compares had been built up under a completely free trade system. British and foreign life insurance companies can enter Canada without having to pay any tax not imposed on purely Canadian companies, he Ud.
There "are 53 life insurance companies operating in Canada, he noted, of which 28 are Canadian and 27 British and foreign. There is no rate making bureau. Each company he declared, has the right to estabM&h its own rates. Completion is keen and healthy and it has 'benefited the insuring public, he said. It has ted to liberalization of poltoy contracts, the introduction of new benefits and towered cost of insurance. There is no other business in Canada less monopolistic in character than life insurance, he declared.
Mr. Earle further drew attention to the fact that the funds .of a life insurance company represent the accumulated savings of its pollcyhoMers. All profits earned by the company, except for a very small shareholders' interest, are returned to the policyholders. Referring to a recent threat of an investigation of life insurance made by members of the C.C.F. party in Canada, he asserted that such Investigation has been going on for a couple of generations and is still persisting. No other business, he held, is so closely supervised or so rigidly controlled by Federal and provincial governments as life insurance.
