PENDULUM OF HISTORY TAKES REFUGEE BACK AS CONQUEROR
When young Msnfred Philip fled from Germany in 1989, a refugee from Nasi persecution, he did not realise that the pendulum of history would bring him back to the scene of his un-hsppiness in the guise of a conqueror and guard over the very supermen-who had destroyed German Jewry.
Having reached the United States with the aid of the agencies of the United Jewish Appeal, he and his mother, Mrs. Dagobert Philip, settled at Easton, Pa. Some ten months later he enlisted in the U.S. Army and waited for the opportunity to meet his oppressors on the battlefield. That opportunity was not long in coming. Soon he was en route to Europe destination Germany where he managed to settle a few personal scores to his own satisfaction as well as to the satisfaction of the American Army.
But these old scores were as nothing, compared to the flaming anger he feels now, for Pvt. Philip, in the course of official duty, has been to Dachau, the most notorious of all the concentration camps. On his return, Philip, who is stationed neer Munich with the Civil Affairs Unit, wrote to his mother:
"I also was in Dachau the other day and although I have not seen the worst there, it was enough not to forget it all ray life. I understand that the United Jewish Appeal is going to start a tremendous drive for rehabilitation and resettlement of inmates of concentration camps."
Then he asked that 850 be withdrawn from his bank account and sent to the United Jewish vAppeal for Refugees, Overseas Needs and Palestine to support the relief and rehabilitation program carried on by the Joint Distribution Committee,; which together with the United Palestine Appeal and the National Refugee Service receives funds through this campaign.
