A New Year Greeting
By Sir Ellsworth Flavette,
National Chairman of The
Canadian Palestine Committee
The disaster to the Jews of Europe in the pre-war yean and during World War II should be uf-flcient to shatter the complacency of all the victorious nations in re-"gard to the world Jewish problem.
After World War I the Allied Powers dedicated a National Home for the Jewish people in Palestine to the amelioration and solution of this problem. This was done with the spur of a much less urgent crisis in the affairs of world Jewry than exists today. The setbacks suffered by that National Home are part of tke pattern of world policy which defeated world peace and the League of Nations in the inter-war period.
It is believed that the United Nations will deal justly with the Jewish people in the matter of Palestine, an issue which rests so heavily on the Christian conscience of the world. To the Jewish people it is the New Year's wish of the Canadian Palestine Committee that for them will be speedily realized what so admirably fits the aim and experience of the Jewish people, the goal mentioned in Clause 3 of the Atlantic Charter, "sovereign rights and self-government restored to those who have been forcibly deprived of them."

(Continued from Page Six) polygamy. One of the most frequent reasons a man gives for desiring to take a second wife is the lack of children, or simply of male children. Fortunately, the cases of polygamy are very rare nowadays and only found among those who still regard woman as a being with rights limited in number and quality.
In another field, too, that of divorce, the application of religious law provides the unscrupulous husband with means to exploit the situation to his great advantage. While he can repudiate his wife without any cause, the latter cannot sue for divorce, even on good grounds, unless she renounces in advance all claims to her possessions and the portion granted her in the marriage contract. has the greatest difficulties in dissuading the husband from his dishonest and criminal purpose; or, at least, in securing for the divorced wife some reasonable financial indemnity.
In the field of inheritance the same inequality exists between male and female. A girl cannot enter in competition with her brothers for the distribution of their common "de cujus" assets, unless, this is stated in the last will, and then only to the degree arbitrarily fixed by the testator. ,
In practice, luckily, things have generally progressed beyond these
primitive conditions; and it happens rarely nowadays that a Jewish girl is completely disinherited or unfairly treated.
While in the numerous families where old traditions are kept up, a woman only leaves the house to visit with her friends or relatives, modern wives of whom there are just as many as of the other kind go out arm in arm with their husbands, accompany them on their visits, attend movies, theatres, concerts, and cafes, playing neither at home nor outside the inferior role assigned to them by ancient custom.
Slowly, but surely, Moroccan womanhood is winning that modern independence which is the criterion for the general progress of a nation.
Moroccan Jewry, marching on in the direction of that evolution, will eventually attain complete emancipation in every domain. Started on the road towards Progress by the protector nation, they will, we hope, continue to travel along that road: this will be the highest praise one can give to the civilizing work of France.

It's the most important thing in the world, isn't it planning for their future! And NOW is the time to make sure those plans come true by putting up a strong, steady fight against inflation!
You and all of us must fight for that future by figbt**g to keep Canada's dollar sound. Unless we can keep that dollar worth a full dollar, You & Co.along with the rest of Canadawill face inflation! That's why it's important NOWmore than rrer wm^-to fight for a dollar chat's worth a dollar.
Why NOW especially? Because civilian gooos are scarce, and
money is plentiful. Now is the time to FIGHT to maintain price con-
trols and price ceilings. We must support and urge the support of rationing. We must buy only what we need, and only at fair markets.
If we do this, we can make* plans for the future as part of a Nation chat is economically sound. If we don't, we're going to nod some day chat our dollar will buy only a quarter's worth of goods. And that means that dollar is only worth a quarter. This is inflation!
Up to now, Canada's controls have really worked. We're been ahk to prevent inflation. But we must fight now to keep those controls working, until the supply of civilian goods can come up to the demand! What happened after the last war mast not happen again! For the sake of our children, for o*r returned soldiers, for ourselves let's keep op the fight against inflation.
