500 Holy Scrolls Wanted For Europe
An urgent appeal for American and Canadian synagogues to contribute 500 holy Scrolls of the Law for use in rededicated and rebuilt synagogues in all parts of Europe was made by Rabbi Leo Jung, chairman, Cultural-Religious Committee of the Joint Distribution Committee, Rabbi Herbert S. Goldstein and Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, for Simchas Torah, the Day of the Rejoicing of the Law.
Already about 200 Sifre Torah have been received by the J.D.C. from all over the United States and Canada and 55 of them were shipped to Europe in time for Rosh Hashonah. Rabbis Jung, Goldstein and Wise said that in many congregations there "repose holy Scrolls in excess of those needed for actual services. What greater 'Mitzvah' could any American or Canadian Jewish congregation perform than make an out* right gift gf one or more of their excess Scrolls for QM overseas 7" A minimum of 500 more Sifre Torah are sorely needed as soon as possible in order to replace those so ruthlessly desecrated and destroyed by the Nazis. Prior to shipment overseas all Sifre Torah are examined and repaired at the offices of the Central Relief Committee, an agency subventioned by the J.D.C. Names of donors are inscribed on all Scrolls.
A part of the Joint Distribution Committee's program of relief and rehabilitation for the impoverished 1,250,000 Jews in continental Europe is devoted to assisting in the rebuilding and re-opening of synagogues, religious schools and other communal institutions. To date in 1945, on the recommendation* of its Cultural-Religous Committee, the J.D.C. program includes the support of Yeshivoth, needy rabbis, and the supplying of additional Scrolls of the Law and other religious articles.
ARABS WANT
(Continued from Page were accorded refuge and said that, armed and desperate, they were determined to make this effort. He said they faced the alternative of suicide in hate-ridden Europe or a haven in Palestine. He then added:
"Thousands of them are determined that they will take things into their own hands. They will steal boats and buy boats and they will go across the Mediterranean.
"The 600,000 Jews in Palestine are all related to these fugitives from misery in Europe. There are arms in Palestine which, for the most part, have never been abused. But should this descent on Palestine start with bloodshed, then the Jews in Palestine will regard it as their own personal fight,"

The entire Middle East is bubbling with potential trouble as the British Third Division arrived in Egypt a few weeks after Mahmoud Fahmy Nokrashy Pasha, the Premier, demanded the evacuation of foreign troops. More units of the Sixth British Airborne Dwision are proceeding to Palestine.
Other British units, including East African troops, are already in Palestine. Parties of desperate Jews without immigration permits recently embarked at Haifa and mobile Palestine police units with armored cars and tommyguns were reported to have commenced a wide search, examining the permits of all persons.

"could prove every word in it was true," Mr. Ginsberg said in court.
The book contains the statement that the kidnapped child of Colonel and Mrs. Charles A. Lindberg was the victim of Jewish ritual murder.
Maertz left the stand with two satchels full of literature, but before he could peddle any Mr. Ginsberg seized him and called a patrolman. Maertz was booked on a charge of disorderly conduct and so was Mr. Ginsberg. The charge against the latter was brought by Mertig.
In Queens Felony Court before
Magistrate Joseph D. De Andrea, Maertz was held in $ 1,000 bail for .hearing in Flushing Court on charges of distributing inflammatory literature. Mr. Ginsberg was remanded in his own custody for hearing the same day in the same court. Magistrate De Andrea said to Maertz: "You are a dangerous character."
Mr. Ginsberg then brought charges against Maertz, Elmhurst and Mertig. He accused them of, violating Section 2,092 of the penal code, "attempting to disturb the
gublic peace at an unlawful assem-ly." Maertz was held in 15,000 bail and Elmhurst and Mertig in $2,000 bail each.
