To Operate Summer Camps In Europe
Summer csmps for Jewish children in nearly every country in -shattered Europe will be supported this year b" the Joint Distribution Committee, major American agency aiding distressed Jews overseas. Jewish boys and girls freed from the horror camps of Dachau and Buchenwald, from the slave-labor camps in Poland and Czechoslovakia, from underground life in Prance, Belgium and the Netherlands, from persecution and starvation in Rumania and Hungary will enjoy the fresh air and wholesome foods, the fun of playing games and the sunlight of summer colonies throughout the continent during July and August
A special J.D.C. appropriation of $200,000, based on recommendations by Dr. Joseph J. Schwarts, ^Chairman of the J.D.C. European Executive Council, will pay for the operation of the summer camps. According to plans now being formulated at New York and Paris, specially selected groups of Jewish children, the undernourished, the ailing, the weakened and the orphans, will spend from two to six weeks in summer colonies for rest and recuperation.
In summer glades near quiet, peaceful resort towns in nearly every country in Europe, thousands of Jewish youngsters will learn the happy games of childhood. For some, their summer holiday will be the first they've ever known.

"Because of his war record as one of America's outstanding military leaders; because of the fine record he has made as head of the occupation forces in Germany; because of the many occasions on which he has intervened to right wrongs there as soon as they have been called to his attention; because of his service in making known his reaction to the German war prisoners and concentration camps and the prompt steps taken to try to end the suffering there and bring the guilty to justice; because of his many acts of friendliness towards Jewish victims of the Nazi in Germany and to the Jewish people generally; because his actions show him to be an American of the highest type to whom the foundation principles of American liberty are more than words."
