400 QUIT PALESTINE, RETURN TO HOMES
Despite reported hardships and the lack of food in Central Europe, 400 persons, mostly Jews, left Palestine on February 25 to return to their homelands. The majority of them are said to be Czechs.
They assembled at the Lydda airport and were flown by the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration to some Egyptian port, probably Alexandria. There, ships were to transport them to their native countries.
There has been considerable secrecy about the entire operation and UNRRA officials in Palestine would not discuss the matter.
The secrecy may be based on security measures because underground organizations frown upon any reduction in the Jewish population in the country.
In some quarters it was believed that these persons are leaving because of the tense atmosphere in Palestine. But it was pointed out that applications to leave require many months' consideration and that most applicants had mode up their minds long ago.
